Alright I need some help.  Will be spending next week in Austin helping my son-in-law move into their new home.  I will have several hours a day with nothing to do (have to wait on son-in-law to get home from work for most of the stuff that needs to be done).

1.Where can I get a great steak?
2.Good BBQ?
3.A good cigar?
4.What gun store do I need to see while in town?
5. And whatever else I might need to see/do in 4 days?  (Already planing to    hit LaRue’s)

1.Where can I get a great steak?
Don't listen to raves about Ruth Chris', Churrascarias, etc.. Go to Austin Land & Cattle. It is Downtown. Best steaks I've ever had w/out loads of butter and crap on them. I think I had the Prime Rib or Ribeye.

2.Good BBQ?
Rudy's probably. Very good, very cheap. Like a Gas Station but everyone knows it is the bomb place to get BBQ. Also IronWorks downtown has some charm, and County Line in Bee Caves on the lake is cool with live music and turtle feeding for the little ones.

3.A good cigar?
No idea, probably some cigar shop downtown.

4.What gun store do I need to see while in town?

If you've never been to a Cabela's go down to Buda (about 20 mins south) and visit it. Cool place, lots of guns. Also Tex-Guns on Manchaca or McBride's in Round Rock.

5. And whatever else I might need to see/do in 4 days?
Sporting events? Live Music on the weekends? 6th st on Thurs-Sat nights? The Oasis on Lake Travis has a nice sunset view. Zilker Park and Botanical Garden are all free and very nice place to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Don't go to the SAXET gun show whatever you do (*LOL*) or you will end up dead probably.. Umm what else...   :D

www.austin360.com has lots of weekly events/listings...

1. Hard to say. Texas Land and Cattle is good. Houfbrau use to be real good now I don't know.

2. Rudy's, Smokey Jo's, Richard Jones. Actually the best BBQ is in Lockhart or at Coopers in LLano.

3. Don't smoke but I like the smell of good pipe tobaco.

4. McBrides. One of the largest sellections even though prices ain't that good. Bargans can be founth though in their usd rack.

5. Cabela's if you have never been. Sixth street but just don't get rolled by the crooks.

I was born and raised in Austin and live there until I joined the Navy but I go back a few times a year. Here are a few of the must see places.

Go to Sullivan's for a great steak and they have a huge humidor for cigars. Stubbs BBQ is great also try the Ironworks.  Really any BBQ in Texas is gonna be good so dont sweat it. I go to blackland gun shop out in hutto, cabelas is down in buda. Mcbrides gun shop on Lamar is a waste of time, they are not very helpful and have poor customer service in my opinion.  You can't go to Larues they don't have a showroom phone orders only, unfortunately. I tried a few years ago. If you are LEO or military Try GT distributors out North they stock everything, but you have to be military or LEO. Black land is where some of the guys from larue hang out sometimes. 6th street is cool if you are into bars. Also try Huts hamburgers on 6th by the whole foods its great, get the " DagBurger " with buffalo.

2)  The Salt Lick in Driftwood.  A bit of a drive, but worth it.

4)  The Gun Store in Cedar Park.  Very black rifle friendly.

For steak I would recommend either Sullivan's (although it is a chain) or Austin Land and Cattle (local and not to be confused with Texas Land and Cattle which is a big chain)

Cigars - Not sure but beleive that Sullivans has a large humidor.

BBQ - A couple choices depending upon the type of BBQ you are looking for.

Best Sausage Links and Brisket - Kreuz's Market in Lockhardt but be forewarned everything else besides the actual meat is really not very good.  If you just want to eat "meat" and no slaw, potato salad, no sauce, etc. but just throw down 5 links and a beer it's heaven... me personally I like a tad bit a variety when I eat besides just sausage links with no sauce.

Best all round BBQ joint - Salt Lick in Driftwood has great meat, sides and sauce and is byob so just roll your own 12 pack in.

Best upscale BBQ - Lamberts downtown Austin if you want more exotic fare like quail and boar with more untraditional sides like  green beans and gourmet Mac/n/Cheese.

Gun Store to Visit:

Cabelas if you have never been to one and want to see sporting goods displayed on a Super Walmart scale with customer service to match.

The Gun Store in Cedar Park: This is a smaller local shop, some Class 3 firearms and suppressors.  Extremely friendly and knowledgable individuals.

McBrides:  If you are jonesing to pick up a $5,000 to $10,000 Beretta they will have a whole wall of them to choose from at MSRP.(one of the handful of Beretta Premium Dealers in the Country)

Sportsman's Finest in Bee Cave:  Local shop with high prices and medium level of service and friendliness.  Selection size is on the smaller side but everything is of high quality.   Also, if you are into exotic stuff and just want to stroll through they have a M134 Minigun, Mark 19, Dual 50 cal BMGs antiaircraft setup, Anzio 20MM Vulcan on display as well as a decent but overprices selection of title 1 and 2 firearms.  If you are into fishing they also have a great selection of fishing gear.

The only other touristy thing I can think of is going out to the Oasis on Lake Travis to watch the sunset and have a drink.  Drinks are expensive and Mediocre at best and try not to eat anything there except an appetizer but the view at dusk on a clear evening really is amazing.

Have fun in town.

answer the same for both. My house. But for someone wanting to spend a bunch of money on a steak Outback works fine for me. For BBQ I usually just eat my own but Rudys is ok. You know what if you want good BBQ go to Bens Long branch on E 11th ST.

for gun store go to Austin Gun Liquidators north between Round ROck and Pflugerville.

Your right about LaRue.  Called the other day and no walkin's, not even to pick up a catalog.  I was going to order some items, but was hung up on before I could say anything.  I guess they were too busy to talk to anyone.

#1 & #3. I haven't seen anyone else mention Cool River in North Austin.  Good steaks, and I think they have a cigar room.

#2. I eat at Rudy's with my family once a weekend.  You could also try the Salt Lick in Driftwood.  As much for the experience as the food.
#4.  McBrides, Cabela's, or Red's indoor range if you want to shoot, too.
#5. Visit the lakes, Texas State History Museum.

Heroes and Legacies has a great selection of cigars.  I like to pick them up there and take them up to Cool River (they have a lounge).

Is GT Dist. for law enforcement/military only?  I just checked them out for the first time today.  I called and asked if they dealt with the general public and they said they did.  But it did look like the purchase of some products was restricted (glocks and sigs, among other things)

GTs is my favorite toy store.  They will deal with anyone who "can find the place."  Yes, some of the guns (Glock, S&W, Springfield, etc...) are "LEO", but Military/Fire/EMS/ and security counts as well.  I buy nearly all my stuff there.  They are very helpful and friendly there.

Other gun store would have to be McBrides.

Oh, and for places to eat... you could eat at a different local resturant for every meal and run out of time.  Depending what your taste is running to.

I find it funny that GT's right across the street from my bank.  But it does make me feel safer banking there after seeing all the state troopers parked out front.

Very nice selection they have there.  They've even got quite a few bushies and RRAs hanging up on the walls.  Oh, and those sigs

McBrides is not that bad,,, if you know how to work his system.
He has 3 prices on all the guns,, the one you can read, the one the salesman will quote, and the go to Joe with money in hand,, usually @ dealers.
Everything else is just under MSRP.

1: Flemings downtown
2: smokey joes (think that's the name) at 4 points aka 620 & 2222.  total hole in the wall, all outdoor seating.
3: pretty sure cedar street on 4th has a humidor and outdoor seating to listen to music and smoke.  keep in mind austin is a "smoke free city" for the most part, so you'll need to be mindful of that.  someone mentioned cool river....they have a smoking room.
4: I'm not a huge fan of any of them.  but that's just me.  heritage, mcbrides, cabelas, GT's, etc
5: nightlife, unless you're in college, stay away from 6th st.  if you want to bar hop, hit 4th and 5th.  austin is much more interesting in the warmer months.
