I just wanted to let everybody know I was able to speak with the Republican candidate for Sheriff in Travis County, Raymond Frank. The one question I made sure I asked him was what his policy would be on CLEO signoff's for Title 2 firearms. He told me that he would sign and that he also did during his previous term as Travis County Sheriff. ( I think in the late 70's/early 80's) I realize it is hard to vote against a current CLEO that is signing but I just thought it would be good to let everyone know Mr. Frank's position so that if they were considering voting for him due to his positions on other issues that the CLEO signoff won't be a deal-breaker. |
I appreciate the information... |

What is his postion on Austin Parks Police arresting people on the highway in the middle of the night? What is position on corrections officers at the county jail turning the TV in the holding area to the food channel after serving a lunch of crackers and unidentifible lunch meat? |

www.raymondfrank.com/index.html He wants to ban tasers?
|
wtf? |
|
From reading his site and listening to him on a talk show interview, he sounds like a person very fed up with the current state of government, local and fed. - He's against Tasers saying they are torturous and are being misused - He didn't get too specific, but he seems to be very concerned with officer attitudes toward the general public. He's an old school Texas lawman. - While he says he's not for the use of it, to reduce prison crowding and what he things are BS offenses, he wants to lower the possession charge of MJ from a B to C misdemeanor (applicable small amount possession). Now it gets more interesting: - He wants to keep Federal agencies like Homeland Security out of county offices. He says once they get a foot in the door, they take over local government. (note that he fought hard to keep the office of Sheriff even open... I was not aware, but he said they wanted to suck it up into a federal system (make it an appointed sub position under fed control instead of a local, elected position). - He talks about a movement on the county level to safeguard individual rights, specifically contrary to the direction the fed has been moving in recent years (or decades...). I missed the specifics of his plan, but it sounded like he and other county level guys are really setting up to prevent the dismantling of local, elected offices that are supposed to watch over individual rights. He gave out his personal cell number on the air for anyone to call him. If anyone has more info on this please chime in. |

given that the candidates don't seem all that far apart on other issues, I'm not sure if I can support a candidate who wants to ban taser use, honestly... I hate to vote (D) for anything, but I am not sure if I can support someone who says something this stupid. |

I'll be voting for Greg Hamilton. I'll take the devil I know. He's signed off on several NFA forms for me. For all I know this other guy will have a change of heart on the matter. I don't trust what politicians say while they're campaigning. And honestly, what's wrong with Hamilton? Personally I don't think party affiliation matters too much when it comes to the Sheriff. |
Agreed. We've had good Sheriffs of both parties (Terry Keel!), but Greg Hamilton has done well. |
exactly what I was thinking got 4 of his autographs.....trying to make an even half dozen by year's end..... |
|
OP, When you asked him about signoffs, did you ask him specifically whether he would signoff for ALL title 2 items? What if he decides you don't need a machine gun, or suppressors? The Republican sheriff in WilCo (whom I've met, and generally is a nice fella) will not sign off on suppressors. Rumor has it it's due to an incident in Pflugerville, which is outside his jurisdiction anyway. So I'm curious whether you pinned him down on specifics about signoffs. Not that I trust a word he says during a campaign. |
I didn't go into specifics, just asked what his general policy would be on signoff's for Title 2. He seems to be very approachable so if you have specific questions just call and ask. Phone# is 512-327-2034 Remember, he did serve as Sheriff a couple of decades ago and should have a record on signoff's. Which, if what he's saying is true, would help validate his claim that he will sign. |
| OH N0! Not the "Sheriff that shoots straight" again! He comes out of the darkness every 4 years to run for an office he held many years ago (1973-1980). We really don't need an 83 year old has been for sheriff. Don't mess with a good thing, vote Greg Hamilton. |
So why were you arrested by the park police, and how were the crackers?
|
Will WilCo sheriff sign off on SBR for people in city limits? Any idea if the Libertarian candidate in WilCo will sign for all title 2? |
last I heard, WilCo sheriff was NOT a fan of title II stuff as he signed off on a suppressor, owner used said suppressor and shot up neighbors dog, got public and ugly, and cast bad light on sheriff. or so the story I was told goes, by two different people that being said......I'd get the story from the horses mouth (I didnt check because I'm not a WilCo resident) |
I believe he'll sign off for MGs, but not suppressors. The dog shooting incident I'm told actually happened in Pflugerville, so it wasn't even in his jurisdiction (though I didn't hear whether he did the signoff originally.) This is just what I've been told by a few folks, could be wrong. As for SBR signoffs -- which city are you in? You could ask your local PD. I think WilCo signs on SBRs but I'm not certain. WilCo doesn't care whether you live in the city or not, but some folks have better luck with RRPD. RRPD will sign off on suppressors, but only after a lengthy background check. And by lengthy, I know some guys that have had to wait for about 6 months. If I lived in WilCo, I'd be buying on a trust, unless I found that my local PD would give me a quick signoff. I don't know what the story is in places like Leander or Cedar Park. |
| Iirc you can only ask the Sheriff if you live in the county outside of the city limits, otherwise you have to do the trust or have the CLEO of the city you reside in sign. The Wilco Sheriff is a shooter but has his reasons for not signing off on certain items. |
+1 which is why everyone in Travis County has the sheriff do it, rather than Acevedo (APD Chief) a little off topic, but will Acevedo sign? he seems awful....I dunno....California to me. |
From what I'm told, APD actually tells people to go to Hamilton. See, Hamilton keeps track of who's buying what, and local LE seem to have agreed that they want it this way. He's the local 'registry.' ETA: I approached Pflugerville (Chief Moose)'s office about it once. His admin assistant thought I was asking him to give approval to purchase a handgun. I gave up at that point. |
Check the archive for details (2005) the crackers were awful. |
If you're in Alaska, what's it to you? 1) The Sheriff has nothing to do with the Park Police. That would be the City of Austin. 2) I agree that the food channel thing is bullshit. Assholes in jail shouldn't have TV to begin with. It's county jail. Not a country club. So....when you were in jail there, you thought it sucked? Good. It's suppose to. |
