Do they work as well as a spotting scope?

Not as well as a spotting scope but for shorter distances and bigger calibers they'll do fine in a pinch.

nope.  10x binos are about as good as a 10x rifle scope.
not close to a 25x spotting scope,

Try these:

Not as good as a full size scope, kinda splits the difference. Used it to see 22 and 17 holes in the 50 yard targets at Targetmasters where it's pretty dark. Also, it's not overly powerful, so you can lean against a wall or the bench and see without using a tripod.

I use the 12x -24x at the deer lease to get a better look at deer around 1000 to 1500 yards, not ideal but lightweight, and you can get them on ebay new for like $45. When it gets within 500 yards, I use my Leupold scope and binoculars.

STAY AWAY from the Remington compact spotting scopes they sell at Walmart. So junky, I gave it to my 4 year old daughter to play safari.
