Anybody use any of those solar powered motion sensing yard lights? I need something to put at some property where there's no electricity, but there are some houses within 100 yards. I've got some tweekers looking for stuff to steal. They just cut some locks off a cargo box with nothing in it. I don't need them getting brave. I need a light maybe a strobe, with the ability to add some type of buzzer or siren, get the neighbors farm dogs barking. I'd put it high on a steel pole where they would have to shoot it out to turn it off. Any ideas? I've got an infared game camera, but they would steal that for sure. It's a rough area at night. I know there have been two people shot/killed at night trying to steal cars out of people's yards in the last 5 years. Probably not enough at this rate. |

Outdoor motion sensors are prone to frequent falsing, due to random motion of grass, tree branches, small animals, etc. - Not a problem if it's only turning on a light, but a major annoyance if it sets off an alarm every time it happens. Most of the solar powered motion sensor lights aren't particularly bright (i.e., several dozen lumens or less), but can be modified with a much brighter LED if you're handy with a soldering iron. Deal Extreme has a nice assortment of LEDs for upgrade projects - Anything made by Cree or SSC is just about guaranteed to be stupidly bright. |

my parents had one on the front porch for at least 25 years..Dad put it there as living Rural, you learn to like alot of lights that come on suddenly. it was set so you would get up the 4 steps, take 2 steps towards the front door, just reaching the handle and 150 watts were suddenly in your face..look at Graingers for a commercial. heavy duty one. Dad said more than once "someone flew off the front porch last night" on the average it was 4 times per year by his reckoning. figuring if you flee due to bright lights, you probably were'nt there to use the telephone they were Living 90 mi N of New orleans on a major state route, there was lots of times some one was stopping for directions, most were legit, many were asked to leave before leaving thier car. |
