| Do any of you guys know and local machine shop that are willing to train? I've wanted to get into machining/welding for a long time and i'm finally trying to go for it. Problem is, I haven't found any shops yet that are willing to train. They all want several years of experience. I am even willing to be "shop help" for the time being just to get my foot in the door. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks, Justin |

Have you considered community college? Take a couple of evening classes, get some certificates in stick and tig, might help. Last time I went down to Corsicana I saw a couple of billboards advertising for oil field welders. Oil is up and down, but it still might be worth a look. This is the best place I know to ask any kind of welding question: http://www.hobartwelders.com/weldtalk/ |
I recently picked up my manual machinist certificate at a local CC. Some shops will train you but the pay will be lower and the learning curve will be longer. Most machine shops are in the business of making chips and not training a new guy, but if you know someone already in the biz that may be a big plus. Or you can go the expensive route and get a mill and lathe for the house and learn on your own. |
