Last nite both of my cars were broken into...

Me, being the idiot I am, left my wallet in my car after picking up dinner b/c the wifey was outta town.

So looks like they got me for 450 in glass and 100 in cash.

Called the wife.  She says we are moving.

Dallas Police don't even come out anymore.

They call you back and then tell to expect a call from a detective.

I know how you feel man. When I lived over at the condos at Preston and Beltline, cars were getting broken into left and right. Well the one day I left the face plate on my radio, my car gets broken into.

I called the police, and they actually came out and took prints. I was amazed. No surprise, I never heard anything back after. The bastard who broke into my car bled all over the leather seats.

Sorry to hear it man.  When we moved outta Richardson, the fuzz was telling me that the baddies were getting on the DART train in South Oak Cliff and heading up north to criminalize shit then simply jumping back on the train to get back south.

We've had no problems in Sachse yet, but I guess  it'll get up here sooner or later.

Do you have a car alarm and was it set? I ask because I have come to doubt the effectiveness of these things since they go off on accident all the time and people generally ignore them. I just wonder if they are a deterrent at all or just a feel-good application of money poorly spent.

we had a problem with break-ins where i live (uptown area). after we finally got fed up we went to our council woman and she put us in direct contact with the police sergeants in charge of our area.

now we have their personal cell numbers and a 24 hour undercover unit watching over everything. i've watched a couple would be thieves get arrested by the "bum" hanging out in the park.

You can always leave on old worn out suppressor attached to a broken gun in your car to be taken.  Then its a felony if they are caught.  Just sayin.

Blame the system.  Vehicle break ins are misdemeanors and just a slap on the wrist if caught.

Hell the Dallas Morning News ran a job application story on stealing ATM's.  Went into how its not that big of a crime as far as the police are concerned,  the charges are minimal at best, and how much money you can make with each theft.

Sorry to hear that! What part of town?

I was broken into 3 times when I lived in Carrollton. I never left stuff in plain sight at night, but the illegals in the next set of apartments would send their little elementary school aged kids into our neighborhood to see what was in the cars, and watch what people put in or took out. The last time, I chased two little kids off who were looking in my windows, and that night it got broken into (even the trunk where they got my tools, compressor & tank, etc).

I got broken into once in Dallas after I'd only been there about 2 months, so I decided to move. No problem since I've been in Plano, but I'm starting to see a lot more traffic via the Dart and a lot more scummy looking / gang looking people walking around the neighborhood with backpacks on.

Definitely time for someone up there to start staking out some vehicles.  Even down here in Austin there are some neighborhoods which used to be decent where the scumbags are coming into now from the bad areas.  One of my co-workers had her husband's F150 broke into a month or two ago...  the same thieves hit every Ford pickup in the neighborhood using the screwdriver through the sheet metal just under the lock method.

Moved from Dallas (Lover's Lane/the Village) to Garland last year.  Haven't regretted breaking my lease for one minute since.  The four years I lived in Dallas, I had a total of 8 vehicle break-in's.  Police never showed the slightest interest in any and would just give you a report # for insurance purposes. (this is done all over the telephone)

The last one was the final straw.  Bastard broke into my truck and spent over 20 minutes trying to figure out how to hotwire it.  I say "trying" because he did over $3,500 in damage to the steering column and electrical system.  The amount of stripped wires, crimps, and cut wires, showed he spent quite a bit of time sitting in my truck with the alarm going off and he could have cared less

The truck was parked directly in front of my town home and I had gone out for the night with friends.  If I had been home, I probably would have been in the Dallas Morning News the next day and shopping for a good criminal defense lawyer to represent me in a shooting case

My truck has been broken into 3 times in the houston wiloowbrook area. They would just hit the lock and knock it in. After paying for the repairs out of pocket to keep the insurance down after the 3rd time i just left it as is. There is a hole where the lock was on the drivers door. A cop even pulled me over when he saw it as he passed. I told him about all incidents, gave him my dl, insurance and chl and we talked for a while about the scum on the streets. Atleast he checked it since it looked suspicous

Wow, this is all great to hear considering I'm moving to Dallas from Austin in a few weeks. Is it this bad in uptown area? Back when I lived in Miami my biggest fear was my car going missing and it getting stripped, however I never had any problems even though I knew a lot of people that did. Since living in Austin for 3.5 years I've had my car broken into once and the other time sitting on blocks.

Some of my friends live in uptown and they've all had what I would call "smash jobs".   Basically, they got careless and left something (radar detector, CD wallet, laptop, GPS, etc) in the car and some POS busted the window, grabbed the gear, and was gone in less than 10 seconds.

If it costs more than $5, someone will try to steal it in Dallas.  A classic example of this was my neighbor in my old town home.  He was grilling on his nice stainless steel propane grill and stepped back inside to watch the last 5 minutes of a college hoops game.  When he stepped back outside to check on the burgers, someone had made off with his grill with his food still cooking on it.

I'm a police officer at one of the local universities here in San Antonio.  One of the biggest things we have around here is that the students keep leaving things in vehicles. They think nothing will happen due to the fact that it is a private university.  Samething, smash and grab.  Ipods, lapops, CD's, navigations systems, stereos and whatever else they may find.  Students just don't listen.
I had my truck broken into as well at a local Home Depot.  I guess the alarm scared them off.    They got in just below the door handle.  After that I installed some "Jimmy Jammers" behind the door handles.   The truth is, crime is at an all time high.  It's getting worse for everyone.  No matter where you live, at some point it will get you.  Just take all the precautions you can.  It doesn't always matter I know but, never leave anything visable in your vehicle.  All these low lifes are looking for a quick buck.

Dallas is a suckhole.  A lot of decent folks, but the rats own this ship.  I've never hated living in a place as much as I do here.  I've finally convinced the Mrs. that life's to short to live in Dallas.  We live in a nice neighborhood, but the POS know that's where the good stuff is.  On the nice nights when we leave our bedroom windows open, we can hear the gunshots from the apartments across the highway.

We're making an offer on a place on the lake, in a secure community (as much as it can be) in E.Tx this week.  Two acres, lakefront, on a nice bass lake.  I've convinced her that we need a small bass boat too.  She agress.  Screw this town.

EXACT same thing happened to my new (then) Dodge Ram pickup in 2001 - and when I lived near the same place you did. Ditto,

We live in a low crime rate city and very good neighborhood. I know everyone on my block and they know us and I still don't leave junk in my vehicles. Anyhow, me and the family is going to spend two months in Tucson this summer. I've spent some time in the area but it's new to her. So she bought a GPS device. I was talking with her last night about this same exact subject. I told her, above and beyond all else, DON'T leave that thing in her Tahoe or anything else of value. Just about every Smash and Grab I've ever heard about is due to people leaving junk in the vehicle like you mentioned.

You're best bet in my opinion is to avoid temptation by removing valubles, install a car alarm, and make sure you have good insurence. I wouldn't hide in the vehicle with a gun or set traps. If this is a repeated issue, chances are it's someone in your neighborhood.

While I couldn't agree more, you , as an attorney,{at least I think I read you were a lawyer} know what happens in the prosecuters office, just hiring a competent lawyer will cost thousands, more if it goes to trial. You also know that some prosecuters will take a loser case just to teach an expensive lesson to someone who "takes matters into their own hands".

If you catch them in the act, in say a capacity of a property owner checking his/her property, all good{you still might get a douchebag prosecuter, but if it goes before a jury, there are no treble hooks entered into evidence.

No need to be shitty. I know plenty about trot lines and I also have a pretty good idea how the legal system works. Treble hooks painted black and hung from the ceiling. I for one would not want to take a chance on getting the one cop out there that would write it up. I live in Travis County, where you will get hosed for doing what you suggest.

Like I said, I agree with the notions that stupidity should be painful, doubly so when you are a stupid thief, but I would hate to see anyone go through the system because of a boobytrap. Let alone the civil case. If you catch someone breaking into your car, and you make a citizens arrest { completely legal under 18.16 of the Texas penal Code:Article 18.16 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure - states that "all persons have the right to prevent the consequences of theft by seizing any personal property which has been stolen and bringing it and the supposed offender before a peace officer or magistrate. There must be reasonable grounds to suppose the property to be stolen and the seizure must be openly made and the proceedings must be made without delay." }

The code says nothing about the condition of the suspect.

Cute puppy. Another thing you can do if possible is what I have done to discourage salesmen, Witnesses{of the Jehovah variety} and BGs who ring to make sure no one is home. Now I have 4 snarling dogs who weigh between 55 and 100 lbs that let you know they are here even if we are not.{They will come and greet you at the door or any window you go to} the other thing I have done is rewire my doorbell to several outside speakers located on the porch to be the sound of Crotalus Atrox, the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. One does not stay in front of a door very long if they hear rattling coming from three or four locations around them.

Perhaps you just happened to be in the car looking for something you forgot when the BG started to break into your car.  Not your fault he so focused on your radio/gps/cb etc., he is unobservant to notice you.  Stranger things have happened, all of which you don't have to explain until you meet with your attorney and see if the state plans to charge you.  4. Burden of proof is still on the accuser.  Speculation isn't proof.

Need to just leave some jewelry and things of high value on the dash and spend the night in the back seat with your 45 waiting on the lowlifes to hit.

So you can be charged with premeditated murder???????????

Burden of proof is on the accuser.

Let me know how that works out for you.

Correct me if I am wrong, but dosen't Texas law allow you to use deadly force to protect your property after the hours of darkness?.

This is true but, if you set a boobytrap or wait in ambush, YOU are in violation of the law.

Hahaha...I've been saying it forever.  We have no mass transit systems anywhere in America that can compare with Europe.  The only places we do have them is where the non-taxpayers, thieves, rapists, murders, obama supporters, etc live.

Good for them for taking advantage of us complacent suckers!

While we're on the subject, since I park in the driveway, if somebody is breaking in can I go out and shoot them?  I don't want to draw a firearm on anybody, or shoot them, unless I know they are going to die.  I don't need people coming back for revenge after they are wounded (i.e. caught in a trotline) and I don't want to be the bad guy in the court's eyes for doing so.

I know this has been somewhat of a grey area in the past, and I'd like to be sure in case the need arises.

Years ago when I was driving all over the place, there were a few times I ended up sleeping in my car for the night. Twice I had someone come up & try breaking in to the car. I was hunkered down & covered so they didn't see me. Flipping the headlights on or hitting the horn normally got them running

" He says that when it comes to crime statistics, police are only one part of the equation. Others include prosecutors, judges, jails and schools."

He forgot the most import one ... the (so-called) parents, probably better described as the breeders ... 99% of which should be neutered.  That would fix it!

It was a half joke, but what are you doing to further our (America's) cause?  If you say writing your reps, then you're basically doing nothing.  None of these politicians do anything unless somebody is writing them checks.  Unfortunately, short of a full blown revolution, there's really nothing we can do.  So here we sit....taking what they give us...which is whatever is leftover after they give hand outs to the criminals and such.

You haven't seen anything yet. As fuel prices continue to skyrocket, the economy will continue to nose dive. Add in unbridaled immigration, and you are watching the transformation of our once great nation into a third world shithole.
It all begins in the large inner-cities. The jobless criminal have-nots, will feed on the haves.
It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. If it ever does...
