Is there a con to owning a weapon that is not reistered in my name? I own one Glock I bought from a good friend and I am thinking about getting another one from him. Should I register these in my name? What would happen if I had to use it? Would it being in his name be bad? What if I get pulled over? Does the officer run the serial number? These weapons are not stolen, I just want to do things right.

Repeat after me:  "There is no such thing as weapon registration."

You're fine.  Buy without worry.  If you did get stopped and you have a CCW (assuming you've got a license), he'll probably tell you to leave it were it is and won't even look at it.

If it did get run for some reason (highly unlikely), the only way you're going to have a problem if it has been reported stolen.  Even then, tell them you made purchased FTF.

4473 is simply delayed registration, not registration in the way we think about it though.  Sooner or later all those who filled out a 4473 will end up in the national ATF registry, it may take only a couple years or 30, but eventually we all make it there.  I'm in it, and I'm willing to bet thousands of us here on arfcom are in it as well but don’t even know it.

Most of the 4473's I have filled out have been destroyed...

80% of all guns I have owned have either been sold or bought FTF. Many go to addresses in states I no longer live in. I imagine I am not alone, thus making the 4473 have a very high error rate.
