Just so you know, you have our own HTF guy here MADUCE to thank for the imiprovements on the facility.

He runs a great facility in WACO called Tiger Valley.

ELM FORK is sort of a Tiger Valley North.

Improvements, IMO will not stop.  That guy doesn't quit making things better and alot more fun.

Seeing this thread (and others here recently), at the last minute I decided to go there Saturday instead of the hr drive to Tom Bean.....  Hadn't been to ElmFork range in close to a decade. Very nice staff (albeit kind of uninformed), facilities are nice, and the "gangsta" contingent with "stylyin'" stances and sweeping the line were notably absent.  Here are the highlights and lowlights of my visit:

upon arrival, noticed a large contingent of Boy Scouts having a match or clinic.... cool!
Walked up to the "carousel" house to check-in and announced I was there to fire my Garand.  Nice cashier asked "Is that an AK type weapon?".  I said "no, .30-06".
First range-officer put me on a lane that had no 25yd target hanger.
Second range-officer found me a lane w/ 25yd hanger.
First rang-officer apologized and offered me a chair for seated shooting.
benches aren't well suited for benchrest shooting
being able to fire rifles from standing is good (not all ranges allow this).
one range officer called "line hot" while someone was still downrange.
second range-officer immediately noticed it and corrected it.
during a later ceasefire, a young lady took one shot while the range-officer was downrange several lanes over.
saw a lot of AR15's
one AR15 was being operated proficiently by a cute pair of blond young gals.
range-officers made it a point to thank everyone as they left for coming.

I'm really looking forward to when they have the 100yd ranges opened!

How do they feel about AKs ? Would I be frowned upon if I showed up with my ak next weekend ready to sight in my pk-as and a box full of steel cased wolf hp/fmj?

That had been addressed in Dec.  FMJ is ok, steel core stuff like the Eastern Bloc surplus and with penetrators like M885 are not ok, tracer is not ok.  Firing at the mid-90s models 5 and 7 series BMWs is ok.

Don't worry about any AK style weapons, the range doesn't care.  Shooting is shooting and they are glade you are going to them.  No steel core ammo on the range at this time.  Construction will start on the rifle range as soon as they finish the fantasy bays with pop-up targets.  At this time you are welcome to shoot your rifles on the pistol range.  Tiger Valley is hosting training blocks at night for those interested.  We are running an AR/AK rifle session which is on our web-site after work hours.  We will shoot from contact to 30 yards out with transition drills and out of position shooting, weak side shooting and lots of other techniques.  Great things are coming I hope we can bring shooters back who were run off by rude, arrogant range Nuts who ran the place.  See you guys and be safe.

"i like legs" tells me about this place, so when i picked up a buddy from the airport awhile back, we stopped in there.
was glad we did. finally somewhere we can shoot in a realistic manner.(thats close by anyway)
had a great time working the steel over with our glocks, double taps, rapid fire, mag changes, & nobody bothering us about it. the dualing tree was fun too.
good job out there guys, we'll be back.

Yes it is open, a little messy but worth the trip.  Being a public range no one is excluded, just be aware.  Construction should be over in a week or so.  Even like it is, it is better then it has ever been.

Sounds really interesting! I'll have to check this new location out...I love the original Tiger Valley.

As long as it isn't steel core or steel jacket.

Elm Fork is a whole new world.  Up until a month or so ago, the only thing I would have given Elm Fork was a bag full of dog shit.  It had been years since I had been and seethed every time I drove by.  If Elm Fork was ever brought up, I was sure to give my $0.02 about what a shithole it WAS.

It is a great place only getting better.  If you haven't been, you owe it to yourself to go and enjoy.  It will be a better place when complete, and will be completed faster as the pressure of customers continues to swell.

We need to support Elm Fork.  They will set the precedence of the opinion of other ranges around town, and mark my word, those other ranges will start to allow AR's, FMJ, AK's etc.  Why?  Well where would you rather shoot?  If they are the only range that allows me to shoot my gun in a safe way that allows me to have fun, they get my money.  My theory, based on nothing but since Elm Fork has re-opened, now DFW gun club is soliciting people here, and they are starting to allow changes that were only allowed for LEO and not us lowly civilians.

Way to go TJ!

So does that mean the bimetal jackets that most Wolf & other such ammos have? It sticks to a magnet but is no more destructive than anything else.

How is it that ranges used to be able to handle this stuff and now there are so many restrictions? Are backstops just more cheaply built these days?
