My wife and I went to the Cotton Patch tonight for dinner and while approaching the front door I noticed a 51% sign pasted to the window. The 30.06 sign was not on the window in English and Spanish as required. I told the manager that I find it difficult to believe that his restaurant derives over half of its income from the sale of on premise consumption of alcohol. I didn't even know they sold beer because nobody in the entire diner was drinking any alcoholic beverages. I told him that I don't understand why he does not welcome lawful licensed citizens into his business and he gave me a blank stare. My wife was begging me not to make a scene so I left without saying anything more to this idiot. I will be calling the corporate office next week to see if this is the company policy or if the manager acted on is own accord. I will not darken the door of this establishment again. Just thought you guys should know how this particular business acts towards us. Dave |

A non-compliant 30.06 sign means nothing to you. A 51% sign may or may not. It is not a violation to carry into a place that posts a 51% sign if it is not a 51% place, just as it is illegal to carry into a 51% place even if they are not posted. A trick; Look at the actual Alcoholic Beverage License posted inside. It will say either; Sign=Blue or Sign =Red Red tells you that the TABC has determined it to be a 51% location. |
| It might not even be posted on purpose. From what I have seen, TABC produces kind of a universal sign package for places that sell any amount of alcohol and a lot of places just post everything that came in it whether it is needed or not. It sounds like the manager had absolutely no clue what you were talking about, so I doubt he purposely posted it just to try and keep CHL holders out. |
Oh really??????? That is very interesting and great to know! |

got to say first off I wouldn't eat in a place called the cotton patch,,, too many references to tampons and Harlem come to mind secondly restaurant managers,, many are pretty much a clueless bunch as a whole,, trust me I manage restaurant managers,, the FEAR presented by the ABC and the threat of losing a licence and getting sizable fines, hell even going to Jail, makes many owners and managers of business' that sell liquor extremely paranoid at the thought of crossing the line with the ABC It just makes em Bambi in the headlights up on ya.... ..so give the guy a break, stand by your beliefs, call and speak calmly to the GM or Owner and express your thoughts and that you will not be returning nor will your circle of influence until they reanalyze their stance on 30.06 be calm, but give em what for.. |
Good to know. I've seen blue vs. red and always wondered why. |
Thanks for the advise. As a side note, I was not harsh or loud to the manager. I am a Sergeant for a LE agency and had a FOP shirt on so I conducted myself in a manner that would not bring unnecessary attention to my department or myself. I teach a CHL class and I know that his 51% sign was no good for that business without the 30.06 signs to accompany it. I just want to know if this is a corporate decision so I can tell my CHL students and shooting buddies not to patronize that restaurant in the future. |
| Must suck to live in the city. I have yet to find a 30.06 sign in the Longview, Tyler, Henderson, Marshall, etc... area. Most places have that stupid "unlicensed carrying of a wepaon is a crime" sign which I think is a joke anyway since someone illegaly carrying a weapon knows they are illegal. Wal-Mart is even pro-carry as is Cotton Snatch. |
Any business licensed by the TABC is legally required to post that sign, they don't have a choice. |
Some would argue that the sign that is posted might not be within the standards of the State of Texas and that if one were to actually go to court the judge could possibly say that the intent of the message is what's important here and rule against a person carrying a concealed weapon into that business. Dont get me wrong here cause I'm all for concealed carry and the proper posting of signs (if a business really wants US lawabiding citizens OUT of their business) but I would really hate to go through the courts (with all the costs involved) just to make a point that the posted sign was NOT properly hung. Just avoid the business in the 1st place and save your $$$. |

Not all the Cottonpatch Cafes sell beer(beer is the only thing they have listed). Unfortunately, they are also doing a thing with kid's coloring books/sheets that they sell with all the proceeds going to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children....only the DFW locations are participating. mm |
Given the fact that the children treated at the SR hospital receive said treatment free of charge, the SR hospital can use all the funding it can get. |
1) I didn't know that 2) still pretty stupid, huh? As far as Cotton Snatch selling crayons and coloring books to support childrens hospital charities, I think that's a great idea. I haven't seen that around here but I don't eat out all that often either. Last time I went to our snatch, the coloring books were free, but I would gladly pay a small fee if I knew it was going to a great cause. |
+1. They are doing great work at the SRCH. All free. |
That's funny - I just pointed out that sign to a buddy who is an officer today. I was like "Is that the most captain obvious sign ever or what?" and he had to re-read the sign to get the meaning (I read it to be "it's EXTRA illegal to carry that illegal gun here since alcohol is sold here". Why does that make me think of "double-secret probation"? |
trust me I manage restaurant managers,,
