The last time I was there, the person renting the Uzi had to literally stay tethered (with a string I think?) to the person acting as range master. They were told it was illegal to let them shoot it without the range officer 'retaining physical control of the weapon'.

I'd never heard such a thing until heard it at DFW - this was about a month ago. Is that right, or just a rule of the range?

ATF told DFW that they were 'transferring' the weapon unless it stayed teathered to an employee of the owner of the class III weapon.  I know it sounds like a crock, but I was there.

I heard about that.  I think its a crock of shit and DFW ought to get it in writing from ATF in DC.   It may just be an ignorant agent who told them this with no authority to do so.

If that was the case wouldn't renting the handguns be in violation also?  Its not like they fill out a 4473 every time they rent a handgun because in theory they are "transferring" them to the user just as they would the UZI.  If I were DFW I'd challenge it.

That means when we all get together for a shoot we are all violating the NFA when we let someone shoot one of our NFA guns and we aren't tethered to them?  What about Knob Creek or the dozens of other public machine gun shooting venues.  If it was illegal, then I think the ATF would have descended upon these gatherings and word would get out fast about it.

I agree with you guys - what the ATF guy apparently told them is totally contrary to logic. Not entirely surprising, considering some of the insane & conflicting things ATF peeps have told local shop owners & pawn shops.

I went to DFW for the first time a couple of weeks ago.  The guy at the counter decked out in 5.11 gear must of said 6 times don't shot the range equipment or you'll pay 10x this amount (shows his hand with four fingers and thumb extended).  I'm thinking ok, bud relax.

I then asked about why the pause between each shot.  He said because most people can't control their gun and rapid shooting takes out their equipment.  I then ask about shooting my AR and shotgun.  Sure you can.  Shotgun at seven yards only and when nobody else has targets around yours.  AR at 25 yd only, center of target, no head shots.... blah blah blah.

I then asked well how does one shoot 1 second shots when you rent an NFA firearm.  He told me the range officier is tethered to you in order to control the firearm.  No mention of ATF rulings.  After that I didn't bother to ask anything more.  I was fairly put off by these guys.

If that was ATF policy, there wouldn't be any machine gun rentals at the Knob Creek Machinegun Shoot. Hell, you can shoot about anything from an Uzi to a quad Ma Duce at the Knob Creek Shoot....and ain't nobody tethered to anybody. That DFW BS is some ATF agent gone stupid er rouge.

The Bullet Hole is the best range I've ever used- friendly, and renting c3 stuff is painless (and CHEAP!)

I had heard that DFW Gun Range got into ATF trouble for renting out their post-sample mg's.

I myself would never rent a gun that was obtained soley for Law Enforcement Demonstration or Sales. I know it is a common practice though.
