Just heard the Addison police saying that the are the first department in the US to adopt the PS90.  Their stated reason is that if they miss and hit the wrong person, there is less chance that they will be hurt than with other calibers.  If you believed their spokesperson a fellow standing 400 meters away could just let his buddies shoot him all day long. I am about 100 meters from Addison, should I move?

They spent $17,000 on just 10 weapons.  Not sure that was the best use of taxpayer funds.

Remember, this is the jurisdiction that had Volvo patrol cars a number of years ago.

This story was on Fox 4 last night.  My wife's eye glazed over as I was explaining what a poor purchase that was.

Apparently their city leaders did not want them to have AR's (even though their SWAT Officers do) and they can't shoot the 5.7 at their indoor range...

"Where the FN differs, is its overall lethal range.  That 400 meters is considered non-lethal; drastically different than the AR-15," said Addison police Lt. Paul Spencer.

Such an BS excuse.  11.5" AR15 would solve this problem, since they carry AR15 now....And save taxpayers a bunch of $$$$.

I would love to know the dealer who got rich off that deal...

Addison gets to much money form alcohol sales. I worked for the dealership that delivered there HEMI 5.7 Dodge Durango's to them two years ago. I think they ordered something like 20-25 and now there switching to the Magnum and Charger Police cars.

I figured it was something like that. Sounds like they want some publicity or something. I wonder how many officers are pleased with this decision.

41Fan, here's a corrected link. I particularly love this quote:

"In the event that we had a miss, we're reducing the likelihood that somebody else is going to be injured," said Lt. Spencer.

Boy, that's one that could come back to haunt you.

well all other TV watchers know that AR15 bullets intentionally seek out innocent bystanders, while 9mm hits the family dog with alarming regularity....

I must admit that I would never have thought of giving the LEOs a less than lethal rifle with a good guy bad guy homing device in the bullets.  What was it that the police used to use in those dense areas where they did not have to have a rifle.  Oh yeah, I think that the called it a shotgun with buckshot.  Lets see, ar15 + remington 870 + really nice double rifle case.  Nope can't get up to $1700.

Houston SWAT likes the FA version...

Texas
Houston Police Department
Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT)
Issues the 11.43×23mm (.45 ACP) pistol.
Issues the 5.7×28mm FN P90 personal defence weapon from 1999 (five).
Uses the Dragoon ASV-XC Patroller 4×4 armoured car.

Addison should be embarrassed by the purchase of such a lousy patrol weapon.  The chief should be terminated.

HPD doesnt use the P90 much anymore, they mostly use ARs.

so would an officer who wasn't in-the-know be less likely to anaylze his surroundings/backstop before firing? Somebody will wind up rich or dead

Greenville PD has adopted the PS90 for it's tac team for awhile now. I got to finger bang my buddy's rifle back in March. I do believe the are also going to issue the 5.7 pistol to it's officers as well.
