| Well here is the deal. I'm 20 and turn 21 on the third day of school, which is late August. I'm a college student, and am about to move away from mother and father. I'm also about to transfer to a major university from the community college I've been going to. I figure I'll have so much shit going on right around then regarding being at a new school, and being at a new address away from mom and pop, that I figure it will be better to take care of something like a CHL class beforehand. So heres my question. Considering I'll be 20, is there a CHL instructor that will let me take his/her class prior to my 21st birthday (we're talking about 7-14 days before) and let me have the paperwork so that I can mail it in on my birthday? Or for even that matter, I'll put everything in the envelope if they want to hold onto it and let them put it in the mail that Thursday. So can this be accommodated, or is this a major no-no that I'll have to wait for a day off after my birthday to handle? |
You can take the class before you are 21. You cannot apply for your license until you are 21. I don't know of any instructor that will mail your application for you. |
|
FYI- OP is under the impression the Instructor mails the app out, and he is looking to get it delayed. This is not how it works. Here is how it usually works, IME: The instructor teaches the class, and gives you the certifictae. If it is a good class, he also does the prints and photos too. Thus when you leave the class, you have everything you need. It is up to you if you want to mail it out or do nothing. So what the OP needs to do is get a packet RIGHT NOW from DPS, take the class, and then wait till 21-B-day to mail it all in. |

The CHL class just gives you a completion certificate that you include with your application packet. The more helpful classes will give you a correct photo and fingerprint card too. But you have to fill out the application, add the check, and mail it in yourself. So, you take the class anytime you want, put your packet together, and mail it out when you're 21. |
| The only reason I mentioned letting the instructor mail it instead of myself, is because I didn't know if there were any negative repercussions to me mailing it in early that could get the instructor into trouble. Now I wouldn't do that anyways, but I would be willing to let them mail it in for their own reassurance that I don't send it in early. Otherwise it just sounds like I can take the class sometime a few weeks prior to my birthday and just wait it out. Thanks for the info, I'll have to get on it so I can drop it in the mail that Thursday. |
You don't have to be 21 to take the class, so there would be no repercussions to the instructor. |
It depends... (1) It isn't how it's pled that matters...it's whether there was a conviction or not. If the plea is nolo contendere, then they likely will go on and convict. (2) The CHL is denied if the conviction occurred in the 5 years preceeding the application. (3) The ChL will also be denied if someone is currently charged with disorderly conduct and hsen't yet been tried, regardless of how they have pled. |

if i remember correctly you can take the class up to 6 months before your 21st b-day. I KNOW that i wasnt 21 when i took my class and i outshot all the 65 yr old men with 38 specials. Take the class as soon as you can when you still have the motivation. Otherwise you will get busy and fill your life with crap and postpone taking the class forever. same thing with buying your first ar-15. You will NEVER have enough money to drop a $1000 on a single gun. Just do it as soon as you get your hands on the money and you'll have the gun for the rest of your life. You'll still be just as poor as before, you'll just be poor with a nice gun. Basically, money and time come and go. If you want it bad enough then make the leap and get it done. |
+1, you can take it tomorrow, if you want. There's no reason why there would be any repercussions for the instructor. All they're doing is telling you what the law is and how it works if you have to shoot someone, and making sure you can handle a gun safely and shoot reasonably straight. That's good to know even if you never apply for a CHL. |
Right now I'm at 62 days, as if I'm counting. |
If you said where you are in TX. I missed it. I'm an instructor and just moved from Royse City to Emory, Tx. Yes, you can take the course 6 months before and I'll be happy to mail the package for you. I mail them for people all the time for any number of reasons. I do everything; including furnishing the semi auto 9mm, take your finger prints, photos, notary on site, gun range qualification. All you need to have when you show up is a current pictured I.D., if you fax me all the info on yourself I'll have everything filled out before you get here so all you need to do is read it and sign it. The cost is 150.00; that includes everything mentioned before and lunch, snacks and drinks, 150.00 is the total. I class usually runs 12 hours even though I do the paper work for you, you can do a one day course or two day course, your choice.
