Maxtor, Seagate - either of those should be fine. I've used both and supported customers using both, no real issues if they aren't being abused.

If you're going to want to carry pictures around, you can buy smaller external hard drives that do not require an external power source.

They're great.  And small enough to fit in a jacket pocket or so.

I've had a Seagate external 300 GB for a couple of years now and love it.  To expand on TinLeg's idea (I think these are what he means):  A "thumb drive" (they go by other names, as well) is very easy to transport and won't need the power source the much larger Seagate or the like will.  If you're just leaving the external drive plugged in at home for the most part this won't matter, but if you want to travel, etc. with the pics on something more portable a small/thumb USB drive might be a good idea.  If just a small one fits your needs, you can fit rather a lot of images, even high resolution types, on a small USB drive of decent capacity (they're fairly easily found as large as 2-4 GB in many stores).

If you do plan on simply leaving it plugged in at home for the most part that Seagate would be a great choice.  I usually burn DVDs of my images to free up space on my 300 GB, but it takes even me--I take a LOT of high resolution images--a good long while to fill it up.  The 300 GB might save you some money if that's a concern and you don't really need the 500 GB.  Hope this helps.

No, i'm not talking about flash memory.

I'm talking about external hard drives.  Usually it's a laptop hard drive shoehorned into a small a case as possible, along with a USB adaptor.

I have many LaCie drives and love them. Quiet and dependable.

I also use G-Drives and have had good luck with them too.

I picked up a 160GB Western Digital 2.5" drive (no external power required) at Costco a few weeks ago for $105.  Works like a champ.  I use this as my backpack/laptop drive.

Couple of weeks ago Fry Electronics, here in Houston, had the Maxtor 160 gb external HD on sale for $50.  Couldn't help but to buy one!  It's been working fine so far.  The software is nice. It will do automatic backups as frequently (like every day) as you want.
