I should know the answer to this, but I don't, so forgive me.
I've been considering purchasing a handgun, and then, today, I was working in my yard, and a neighbor's pit bull harassed me in the front yard. This is not a good situation, all round. I've thought about the possible problems with the law, and if it comes to it, and only then, I'll protect my family.
Can I buy a handgun in Texas and take it home the same day?

Maybe. FTF yes. From FFL, depends upon whether you pass NICS or not. Yes, take it home, no wait a few days, or never.

Hey thanks guys.
After I calmed down, I did a little independent research.
Looks like it depends on whether NICS is working correctly, hence the difference b/n yes and maybe.
Thanks again.

Once you obtain a CHL you don't have NICS to worry about.  The CHL takes place of NICS.

CHL no NICS check...walk out the door with it.

No CHL...NICS check...upon approval walk out the door, but, you can be delayed.

I was with my kids at our new house that is being built on Friday.  We were in the garage and a huge Lab cam charging us from across the street.  It didn't look mad ... but it didn't look too friendly either.  I quickly got the kids behind me a swept my cover garment out of the way and put my hand on the pistol.  At the end of the driveway was I believe the foreman doing paperwork in his truck.  I can only imagine what he thought.......

Dog got within 5' and I scared him off.  I was not amused.....

Had a similar situation years ago.  Neighbors had a large German Shepherd who charged with exposed fangs and growling whenever anyone went out of our front door (if they were outside).  This was in the 60's.  My prefered carry gun (no, we didn't have CHL then) was a 1917 Ehrfurt Luger.  The dog tried one too many times, and when he crossed the property line, he was greeted with a 9mm slug.  They didn't say anything, nor did they call the police.
