So I was in municipal court yesterday, because I’m a lazy scofflaw who waits six months after my inspection expires to get it redone. While I was there, the nice officer who serves as the bailiff was going over the rules of the court. The part that perked my ears up was when he mentioned CHLs and knives. I’m paraphrasing here, but his speech was essentially they aren’t allowed in the courtroom, so if you have them, take them back out to your car now. This was followed by the "if i see them, it'll get unpleasant and nobody wants that" speech we've all heard at some point in our lives. Now, I live in a dinky little town so court is conducted in the municipal auditorium. I guess technically that means it's not a court building/courtroom if court is not in session? I just thought that was an awfully laid back attitude about the whole thing, given that it's supposed to be a felony. Or am I missing something here about the legalities? |
It is a felony, but since it is in the auditorium he was probably just trying to be sure everyone was aware. |
Would the point have been anymore clear if he was the ass you wanted him to be.

I give the officer in question lots o' points for being much more polite and civil all afternoon than I could manage. I would go nuts after doing that one afternoon, much less once a week. How he manages to keep his temper is beyond me. Having said that and despite the human approach he took in this instance, he's still pretty much a prick. |
I don't want him to be anything at all. The fact that he wasn't being an ass about a felony struck me as odd. I'm trying to see if my understanding of the law involved is correct, or if there's some other nuance here I'm not getting. |

He sounds laid back. Small towns are like that in West Texas. He was just giving everyone a chance to secure their piece without hassles. I do not know "how" he said it, but some seem to be on a power kick. I guess they are the law in the building and we need to obey. |
