I am a member of the Austin Rifle Club. They operate a range located off Hwy 290 between Manor and Elgin (about 17 miles East of IH35). Go to www.austinrifleclub.org

What is the problem with Red's South?  I've never been there myself, but I shoot a couple times a week at Red's North (its less than 2 miles from my house) and have no problems with it.

i found that they were not very 18yo friendly. i got hassled about my age after providing my drivers liscense and hunter education card. i was also forced to endure a safety talk by some assistant (although ive never been forced to have one when i was with my father other than the normal reminder of eyes ears, muzzle downrange ect...)i also had some problems with them a few years back when my mother, who is quite small and uninterested in firearms tried to order a benelli sbe for me in left hand. she also got treated like crap.

The Austin Rifle Club holds a range orientation every 3rd Saturday (and the 18th is next). This is the first step to membership. I urge you give them a try. The orientation is free, and they will expect to see you demonstrate safe range procedures (load, ready, fire, cease fire, unload). If you have a handgun, bring it. Otherwise you can use someone else's.

+1 for the Austin Rifle Club.  Why pay by the hour or by the gun to go shooting when you can pay a yearly fee and go whenever you want?

Never seen that happen at Red's North and I've seen a lot of people shooting there who looked pretty young to me.  I'm way over 18, so I can't say from personal experience, plus they know me there as I am a member and shoot there at least twice a week.  At any rate if that is the worst of your troubles, they would likely go away if you were there often enough for them to recognize you, and would likely go away  in any case once you start to look a little older.  Trust me, you will be 30 something before you know it and when someone cards you for beer it will make your day.

The troubles with your mother is they probably are concerned about "straw buyers".  BATFE and some other LE agencies like to hassle gun dealers about enforcement of not letting people buy guns for others.  To a certain extent that is reasonable (keeping people from buying for felons), but in cases like yours it is just a hassle.  Dealers are caught in the middle of that.
