That's what I'm trying to figure out. The check is from the US Treasury but it's labeled "Austin Tax Refund".

We file our Federal income taxes with the Austin office

ETA:  I'm afraid to ask, since it is rather personal...

But was it a considerable amount of money or just a couple of bucks?  Obviously, don't answer if you'd rather not.

It's definitely not a trivial amount. While I would greatly appreciate the unexpected windfall, I'm scared that the Ministry of Information will come and "correct" their "mistake" if I deposit the check.

My wife keeps saying that this is the refund/rebate from the property tax abatement that happened in TX but that doesn't make sense to me since the check is from the US Treasury.

Well as best I can tell this is related to the amended 1040 return I filed in October for tax year 2005. I'll have to contact my tax accountant to figure out what happened.
