They didn't list any Libertarians, and yes, quite a few are running for office in Texas.  Including for Governor.

Why do people dodge the questionnaire?  I'm in a district where one of the candidates won't answer any questions or e-mails about Second Amendment issues.

If you are that ashamed of your answers and beliefs, shouldn't that tell you something?

If you think that answering the questions truthfully will cost you the election, then are you really going to represent the constituents?

The candidate in question lives about 2 blocks from me and on the same street, so I hope she likes my NRA ILA yard signs.

That's what I have ended up doing for many years. I hate to do it since it seems as if I don't research the candidates, but it always comes down top a straight ticket.
I think the last Democrat I voted for was Jim Wright.

Yup.  People get irritated when I tell them I vote based on their 2nd Amendment views, but so far thats been the ones who have been better on all other issues.

Today is the deadline, so get moving!  Download the application from here and get it postmarked by October 10th.

As for preparing for the vote, well that's between you and your conscience.  In my opinion, the best start is to read the TSRA sheets above in conjunction with this site.  You enter your Zip+4 and it tells you the candidates in your area and their views on most issues.

Its a litmus test for me.... if they don't trust me as a fellow law-abiding citizen to own guns, then I don't trust them to run the .gov or represent me.

Heh. That's funny. The TSRA endorsed Nick Lampson. Heh. All because he filled out a questionnaire, apparently. You'll pardon me if I don't believe that one.

Of course, this ain't Nick's first rodeo, so I'll go off past performance. Gun Owners of America gave him a B in '98, a C in 2000 and a C in '02. Sorry, not high enough for me to consider voting for him.

Next!

Where on earth do you get that? James Werner supports removing the licensing requirement for concealed carry and allowing open carry. Go look. Name another candidate for governor that supports either.

Because voting for Werner is the same as voting for someone who is not Perry, and Perry (for all his other faults) has been very friendly to gun owners.

I really want to vote libertarian.  I'm just not willing to until the libertarian party makes a serious effort at local elections and demonstrates their effectiveness.  If you want to represent me in Congress, I'd like you to demonstrate that you can manage my community effectively.

It's getting close to time folks. Remember a Vote out of spite is like Voting for the Enemy. I personally despise just about every Politcian but I'll be Damned if I'm going to screw myself by Voting for the Democrats or somebody that can't win. Remember how hard it is to get something back after it's lost. THINK ABOUT THE MG BAN! It could be a lot worse if the Dems get control.

And I was thinking exactly the opposite.  After growing up in California, I find it refreshing to see Democrats that actually support the second amendment!  In fact, in my district, the TSRA doesn't even pick one over the other!  I'll be voting for Van Taylor due to the fact that he's a Marine, has a strong stance on illegal immigration and slightly edges out Chet Edwards on RKBA issues, but it's actually a race where I get to pick the better candidate, not the lesser of two evils!!!

I agree with you completely. Vote for the best man for the job. Just don't Vote for the worst because your mad at the best. My concern with voting for Democrats is giving power to a few good Democrats and getting all the Anti-Gun turds that come along with it. It's a shame that we have so few really good choices in America.

+1. Also, being a Democrat, Nick will vote to give Nancy Pelosi (Democrat, California, San Francisco, rated F by NRA) control of the House. I don't care if he wants to repeal the NFA and require nationwide no-permit CCW, if he votes to give the Democrats control of the House, he is an enemy to gun owners. Shelly Sekula-Gibbs all the way!

Another +1.   Giving democrats national seats is crazy.  None of the "good" democrats will ever get any pro-gun  (let alone any non-socialist) legislation to see the light of day with (want-a-be lord and empress) Pelosi as speaker.

I think this country's two party system is in serious need of a new "second" party.  Good riddance dems and hello ?????.

Not to pick a fight, since you already support Van Taylor...but Chet is not the lesser of two evils.  Chet is an antigun, pro military dem.  Let me explain - I recently moved out of his district, and did a decent amount of research on him while I was a voter there.  He talks tough, does decent work representing Fort Hood..I appreciate you voting for Van Tayler.  Chet voted for the AWB, and all extensions that came through the house.  Here is the orig roll call vote -

www.csgv.org/research/votes/keyvotes103/103_assault_hvote.cfm

Edwards is listed as "Edwards" - don't confuse him with the California Edwards...in any case, he's an anti and not worth voting for. I can't imagine why the TSRA didn't endorse Van Taylor.  Chet is a known quantity.

How about this:

I had a discussion with one of her people at the polls.  I said that she hadn't answered my e-mails about the Second Amendment.  He replied, "Maybe I can answer your questions.  What's the Second Amendment?"

I walked away.

They missed Railroad Commissioner in the voting guide.  Is that a huge deal, in the entire grand scheme of things....?  Probably not.  Just noticed it.

The Railroad Commission has a lot of leverage over the oil&gas industry. You may not be able to effect much RKBA policy from it; but it isn't a bad place to network if you plan to run for higher office later. My thought is that we are better off stopping antis before they get a taste for politics, even if they can't affect gun law in whatever office they are running for...

The candidates are:
Elizabeth Jones - R (incumbent)
Dale Henry - D
Tabitha Serrano - L

Anybody know anything about any of them?

Oh, definitely agree with your logic on that one.  I guess I meant to say *relatively*.  <john_lovitz>Yeah, that's the ticket.</john_lovitz>

As far as the candidates:

Jones: Nothing
Henry: Used to be an "R" before changing sides.  Dunno what kind of Repub he was, though (good or scumbag)....... *
Serrano: Farcical **

Great, the Texas Libertarian Party is running an unemployed recent law school graduate of the South Texas College of Law for the position of Texas Railroad Commissioner. She doesn't know what the Railroad Commission does and her recent resume contained the phrase "I am criminal defense."

And people wonder why nobody takes the Libertarian party seriously...

Made worse by the fact that she pissed and moaned and made excuses about it....

If she was worth a fuck, she could have spun it as akin to the NRA ad campaign: "I am the NRA".

"I am criminal defense" could have been a bold statement that she lived and breathed criminal defense.  I can't believe she didn't pick up on that.
