For starters, in what part of the city will you be working?

You will definitely want to live as close to where you work as you can, given home prices, neighborhood you want, school quality, etc. Houston traffic is, well, unbelievable should about cover it.

i live in texas city bout 1/2 mile from galveston bay.  if you like to fish this is the place.  new subdivision going in closer to the bay.  good schools and the taxes aren't outrageous.  oh yeah and texas city has a municipal rifle/pistol/skeet range about a 1/4 mile from my house with annual memberships.  they also keep the range clean and servicable.

conroe is not too bad, and the insurance is cheaper in Montgomery county. I commute to downtown houston( THE Univesity of Houston) and it only takes me about 50 minutes on average

I'd look into the Tomball  or Magnolia area.

I currently live in the city (Spring Branch) but when I move I plan to move out that way.  Nice area....

It all depends on where you live and what you like to do.

I'll throw N.W. part of town out there
Cy-Fair has some of the best schools in the Houston area.
Give us an idea of where you will work and wed can better assist you.

Ah, working on the shannel.  Probably close to where I work.  LaPorte is not too bad.  Deer Park also.  They are building like crazy in Deer Park.  Check out the new housing along East Blvd.  The Fairmont area in LaPorte also.

Pearland is real nice.  I grew up there and in Kemah.

There are several new neighborhoods being built along Beltway 8 between 288 and 225.

Alvin is probably a lot far away depending on where you are working.

If you are on the ship channel, where?  225 & Beltway 8 (Sam Houston tolway)?

How much do you want to spend?

Do you want to build a new house or buy an older one?

How much do you want to spend?

You can get a real nice home for $250k 2500ft2 or a nice 2000ft2 home for $180k to $200k

Go South on Beltway 8/Sam Houston Tollway to Fairmont, then turn left. Down on the right is Village Grove, Fairmont estates etc. Might find some deals in there on Housing. Some newer homes, but most 15 years old or so in Village Grove.

Neighborhood behind Village Grove also, I can't remember the name of it, but some very large homes back there. The ex-mayor lieves back there too.

Good Luck.  If you really don't mind driving, head down Red Bluff and come into Clear Lake/NASA area on Bay Area Blvd. You'll find lots of homes in there, but watch out for flooded homes.

Dan,

IM me and may be we can do lunch some time.  I work in the same area as you.  I could probably show you some places to look.  I don't live in the area any more, but I did live there for 10 years, and have worked in the area for 15.

Pearland is my vote, too.  We live here, and it's good living with great schools and people.  We just love it here.

I'd go with Pearland, but then again, I half grew up there and still have family and friends there.  It's not too far from the Speedway / Beltway.  That'd be your quickest route to Pasadena.  It's also farther from the refineries that tend to blow up every now and then.  Alvin is pretty good but a farther drive.  Friendswood is a little expensive.

I like the pearland area.  The area around 288 & 518 is exploding right now.  We even have a Bass Pro Shops coming in 2007.

There are also a number of newer developments on the east side of pearland near the beltway that would provide reasonable commutes to the ship channel.

After just completing my move..do not order Direct TV from MoveHouston.com.

I'll defer on the rest to the qualified individuals on this board.  Hope your move goes as well as mine did.  Great place to live.
