| Thinkin' about signing up for a carbine class at Tiger Valley in Garland. Anybody know anything about them, been to their school? |
TJ Pilling is the primary instructor for Tiger Valley. He is very qualified for the position. The courses themselves are not held in Garland but at the LT Dillon Range in Watt, TX. The range is approximately 15 miles northeast of Bellmead, a suburb of Waco. A great number of us have been to his matches and/or received at least some instruction from him. Be sure that your equipment works, that you take enough ammo, and you bring with you all the other stuff you'll need at the range. mm |
Waco is on I-35 about 85 miles south of downtown Ft. Worth. There are some decent & cheap hotels in north Waco & Bellmead. You can also camp at the range. If I were driving from Odessa I would take US-84 south out or Abilene and follow it all the way through Waco and directly to the range. I recommend Tiger Valley. Both the folks and the facilities are top notch. If you want to learn how to shoot long range rifle in the wind, this is the place to do it. |
What HBruns said. I took several courses there, shoot at the facilities a lot of times...Best place to shoot, IMO. |
I'd take a bit of extra ammo. the amounts on the web site are on the high side, but having extra is better than running out and finding the Bellmead Walmart is usually out of .223. I rather doubt you'd need something along the lines of Black Hills match ammo, but you might want something more accurate out to 200-300 yards than many of the imported ammo brands. mm |
What he said. And for good reason. TJ is a qualified instructor and overall great guy. Real world experiences is what he teaches. Get him outta of the range and a few beers in him and he'll have some interesting stories for ya. Some will have you laughing in stitches. The facilities is awesome. We had numerous AR15.com sponsored shoots there. |
