Thinking about moving to Austin. Are there any "good" ranges in the area? I mean ones that are OK with black rifles, FMJ, rapid fire, etc... Thanks in advance.

Visited Dallas the other day. Great city but I don't think it's a fit for my business.

About the only one I know of that meets the requirements you posted is Hill Country Rifle Range.  HOWEVER, be advised that the owner "Crazy Richard" can be a PITA.

Austin rifle club would also be OK. Rapid fire is OK as long as it's AIMED rapid fire. Every round must impact the berm.

Except you either have to BE a member or go WITH a member.  And a member can only bring a guest twice in a year... other than that, yeah, it's OK.

I'd like to get out to the ARC to shoot my boomstick offa crosssticks...

Red's Indoor Range is pretty good.  You can shoot anything you smaller than .50 BMG.  Tracer and APIT is probably not allowed, but FMJ is no problem.  A bit pricey at $12/hr, but a nice place.

dmaas:  I know it does not meet your requirements now.
But if you find you have to compromise on the FMJ and
rapid-fire, in order to visit a "good range", I suggest you
consider Eagle Peak.  I hang out there way too much.

What about the Hays County Range?  Is that close enough?  I'm not an Austinite, but it sure is a nice place for Mike Webb's Texas Tactical matches and from what little interaction I've had with the owner, he seems like a really good guy.

I went to eagle creek and the lady there hung over me like a hawk cause I brought a black rifle. She was real anal about no rapid fire, and repeted it 3 times. I know I am young (23 at the time, 24 now)but geesh. You would think after my first 30 rounder that went smooth she would back off. But no, she didnt. Its all good, I have a friend now that has a range in his front yard, do what ever now.

Thanks for the info guys. Good to hear there are lots of options. And by "rapid fire" I mean controlled tactical drills like "standard response" not bump-firing :)

Question: does JHP count as FMJ? I take it the problem is lead contamination so the answer would be "yes"?

JHP does not mean the same as hollow point in my experience. The primary concern with FMJ is damage to backstop or richochet. Eagle peak has been on the verge of getting shut down by the neighbors for years now, and she has to be very restrictive. Unfortunately there are a lot of people in the world who think the rules apply to everyone but them. With that said, it is more enjoyable to go to "Crazy Richard's" or "Scary Larry's" whatever you would like to nick name him. He let's anything safe go, just be sure to let him know what you are planning to do when you check in. Plus, he will always inform you about the next time the world is supposed to be coming to an end. Austin Rifle Club has a nice facility, and the membership is cheap.

Summary, for a quick trip to sight in or pistol paper punch I go to Eagle peek because it is close to me and it is the cheapest. For extended "fun shooting" trips I make the drive to Hill Country Rifle Range (AKA Scary Larry, Crazy Richard). For bench rest competition, Austin Rifle Club is "not bad."

Hope this helps!

Hays County Sportsman's Park Meets all requirements and is NFA friendly.  There will be a carbine match tomarrow at Noon.

I'll be there for that one.  The last one was fun... a couple guys using full auto or suppressed weapons.  Lots of fun.

Just too far from me for casual shooting.   Eagle Peak works the best for me as I can shoot from the bench with my boomstick for load development.   It only sucks if I want to shoot my AR or other milsurp, unless HP or SP ammo is available.  I shoot my M1 out there sometimes, but only with handloaded HPBTs.
