Got the little e-mail from the NRA about it, attorney general got the heads up from the ATF today, that as of today, JUNE 4, 2014, and after if you have a CCW, you won't have to do a background check for a firearm, just show your CCW permit

Here's a link to the press release:http://www.wvago.gov/pdf/press/2014_unLicencesWillQualifyforFederalExemption.pdf

ATF open letter to all WV FFL's:  http://www.nraila.org/media/13285385/open_letter_to_all_wv_ffl_s_06032014.pdf

Does this apply top a rifle purchase too??  it says "firearm" in the press release?

Hot Damn fellas hell is freezing over

Oh, and apparently those of us who were issued permits before today, can go to the sherriff's office, and have our current permits ammended from what i read.  Not sure if there is a charge or not though.

My email from them says "issued on or before June4,2014" That sucks for me. I renewed last year and get delayed at least half the time. I missed the last part about going to the sheriffs office. Not looking forward to paying to play again so soon.

Not sure if you have to pay to renew the whole thing or not, they may just make you a new permit for a small fee.  I'm gonna give it a week or so, and go check, sheriffs office here is friendly, and never crowded.  My permit is good till October 2015, so i got a bit over a year to go on mine.

If this is for rifles and handguns both I'll definitely get mine updated.

I'm pretty sure this applies to all firearm purchases from a WV FFL, handguns and long guns.
I'll be contacting my Sheriff to see what is involved in becoming exempt as my CHL was issued before the mentioned date.

Please post as soon as you find out.  I was planning on giving it a couple weeks for things to trickle down to the local depts.

It's not that you don't have to have a background check, it's that you're already in the NICS system with a CCW and they are finally realizing they have been doing double work.

KY has had this for a while now.

I don't think I will have a problem with Morgan co.  They are just so hard to deal with. They are perpetually behind the curve.

The open letter states "Verify the license was issued within the last five years", so hopefully if your license was issued within that time frame you will be good to go.  I'm going to wait a week or two before calling the sheriff's office to confirm this is the case.

Called the Mon county Sheriff's office today. I was told that since my permit was issued before June 4th, to be eligible for the exemption, I'd have to reapply, pay the $100, and wait up to 45 days. Just like a renewal or initial application. Also they are still doing these things by appointment only.

So, no thanks. I'll just deal with the NICS check like always and wait until I have to renew my permit.

Regardless, this is still a win for WV CHL holders.

I'll just wait till mine is due to be renewed in a year then.  Although here I can walk in any time, and get my permit in about a week

I talked with the AG myself and basically if you have a June 4 or newer permit you're GTG.

Older you have to pay to renew again.  The Sheriff's Office didn't even know and I explained it to her.

I work in the Courthouse so it was easy for me to explain and her trust.

I renew next year and will just wait.

I'm glad we got this passed, but the only thing that changed from last years attempt to this year was the verbiage was changed to appease the ATF. A post June 4 CHL is no different than the one I renewed last June. More political bullshit.

I renewed in March of this year. I'm not going to pay another $100 just for this "privilege".

My permit expires 2019, I'll wait until then, sorry Hardrock and Bubbles , looks like I'll be doing it the old fashioned way until then.

Awesome that this passed and the ATK OKed it, sucks that I still have over 3 1/2 years until I renew mine.  It's not worth the extra $100 and hassle of going to the courthouse to renew just to save 5 or 10 minutes every time I buy a new gun

I just talked to Jacob at the Berkeley SO and he said what's already here. New app, 45 day wait and another $100 bucks.

Totally sucks. Guess I'll just keep filling out 4473s.

You still have to fill out the 4473.  The only difference is whether NICS gets run on the transfer.

I have purchased a couple of firearms since this was enacted. The ATF has not instructed the dealers how to proceed with this so I still had to get the background check. I purchased from Valley guns II.

Depends on who you deal with. I've done a lot of business there and 95% of the time it's been a good transaction.

+2.  I like Tom and his family.  They are good local people and have never done wrong by me on anything I have purchased there.

On topic of this thread, my current CCW doesn't expire until 2017.  I'll just wait till renewal rolls around to be able to start bypassing the point-of-sale NICS check.

Dan.
