Now that I'm in Alabama, I was looking into the requirements for a CWP. No classes or testing required. All you do is fill out a form and take it to your county sheriff's office, take a picture, and pay the fee. The permit costs $5 to $20 per year depending on the county and is valid up too 5 years. So let's say it costs $10 and you want it good for 3 years. That would be $30.

Now here's something I don't understand. Georgia recognises an Alabama CWP but SC doesn't. Alabama recognises CWPs from SC and GA. I thought the reason SC and GA had a problem had to do with the training requirements. Maybe I just misunderstood something.

I just took the SC CWP class and sent my paperwork in... I was told in the class that Alabama and Missisippi  do NOT honor SC CWP's..maybe I'm wrong.  SC just passed a law recently where we will now honor the Georgia CWP..

Alabama has true recognition, it recognizes all states' permits.

(a) A person licensed to carry a handgun in any state shall be authorized to carry a handgun in
this state. This section shall apply to a license holder from another state only while the license
holder is not a resident of this state. A license holder from another state shall carry the handgun
in compliance with the laws of this state.

Georgia has true reciprocity, it accepts permits from all states that accept their own.

(e) Any person licensed to carry a handgun or weapon in any other state whose laws recognize and give effect to a license issued pursuant to this part shall be authorized to carry a weapon in this state, but only while the licensee is not a resident of this state; provided, however, that such licensee shall carry the weapon in compliance with the laws of this state.

South Carolina has a conditional recognition/reciprocity, it accepts permits from states that meet its standards for issuance, which is determined by the chief of SLED.

(1) Valid out-of-state permits to carry concealable weapons held by a resident of a reciprocal state must be
honored by this State, provided, that the reciprocal state requires an applicant to successfully pass a criminal
background check and a course in firearm training and safety. A resident of a reciprocal state carrying a
concealable weapon in South Carolina is subject to and must abide by the laws of South Carolina regarding
concealable weapons. SLED shall maintain and publish a list of those states as the states with which South
Carolina has reciprocity.

We almost had this changed last legislative session, but basically a filibuster by Kimpson killed the bill that would have essentially mirrored what Alabama has and recognized permits from all states. Instead we statutorily added Georgia and North Carolina to be recognized unconditionally, in exchange for ending the filibuster.

I hope they change the state senate rules here, to neuter the power of a lone senator, and maybe we can get something done about this.

It has been talked about by state party leaders since the legislative session this coming year will be much shorter.

So in summation, Alabama recognizes everyone's permit, which triggers reciprocity with Georgia by Georgia law, for Alabama.

South Carolina just passed a law that unconditionally recognizes Georgia, which triggers Georgia reciprocity by Georgia law, for South Carolina.

Alabama recognizes everyone's permit, which allows South Carolina to carry there, but Alabama does not meet the conditions in SC to trigger reciprocity.
