| I'm going to be in SC next week. Someone told me that the CSS Hunley is on a US Navy base. Is this the case? I'd like to visit but will have a firearm that will prevent me from going if that is the case. |

From Wiki: The Warren Lasch Conservation Center is a building located at 1250 Supply Street at the former Charleston Navy Yard, in North Charleston, South Carolina. Part of the Clemson Restoration Institute. The conservation center is now part of Clemson University which would mean any firearms in vehicles would need to be secured prior to driving vehicle on the property. I cannot find anything that says the property is still under feds control. ETA: although the navy shipyard closed in 1996 portions of it are still used for federal operations. From another Wiki: With the closure of the Naval Base and Charleston Naval Shipyard in 1996... In supporting Joint Base Charleston, 231 acres (93 ha) of the former Charleston Naval Base/Naval Shipyard facility have been transformed into a multiuse Federal complex, with 17 Government and Military tenants, as well as homeport for six RO-RO Military Sealift Command ships, two Coast Guard National Security Cutters, two NOAA research ships, Coast Guard Maritime Law Enforcement Academy, and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers. I'm pretty sure the "federal multiuse complex is at the South end of the former Navy yard. The Hunley is at the far North end. Using Google Maps street view I did a simulated "drive "down Hobson St. to Supply street and did not see any trappings of "federal property" i.e. gates, signs, etc. YMMV. The Conservation Center itself (entrances) are posted but that's redundant as CCW in the structure is prohibited as enumerated by state gun law. Perhaps someone who lives in the area could tell us more about it. |
