Hello
We are looking to relocate somewhere out of NY and SC is on our very shirt list of places. My wife has a successful small bussiness at this place www.thewindmill.com
This place is a farmers crafters market, she sets up there every week in her own permanent booth.
She sells slabwood (scrap wood from the sawmill) after the bark has been removed. She paints wildlife sceneries ect on the slabwood. We would like to find a house within an hour to and hour and a half to a place something like the link posted so she could continue to keep her small bussiness and would be more than happy to provide SC the tax revenue she produces vs giving it to NYS.
We really don't want anything close to the coast or in a city. We'll be looking to purchase a house with 10+ ac out in the county.
Any info would be great!

Depending on exactly where you are from in NY, either SC is just like it or nothing like it at all.  Our largest cities are nothing like the major or minor cities in NY state.  I don't know NY, so I don't have a good comparison except that the rural areas of SC are similar to the central and northern areas of NY.

There are farmers markets with many permanent booths in several locations in the state. I don't know specifically what some of these booths sell or if it would be similar to what your wife does(I just go for the veggies and have never really paid attention to the specialty booths). Also, there are a few large flea markets that may be similar to what you are looking for.

As far as living within 1 hr to this location, it should not be a problem to find 10+ acres that fit your desire.

Land values will vary greatly depending on location from $2,000 to $15,000+ per acre. It will not be hard to figure out where high end property is.

Good luck leaving NY. Just remember that moving to SC will require a new mindset as well as the physical move. I know many transplants from the north, and know that the "damn yankee" attitude will need to be checked before you can truly blend in and enjoy living here.

You will love the freedom of this state.

Others will likely chime in with other/better advice, so listen up!

I especially like the large "No concealed weapons allowed" sign posted at the entrance to the US 1 Flea Market in Lexington. Although the sign has no force of law the attitude alone along with the trashy clientele says "don't spend money here". There was a gang-related shooting at this flea market about ten years ago some thug emptied an SAR-1 into a car full of people.

Yep - greater Charleston area.

And Myrtle Beach used to have one on Hwy. 17 right where it splits to Hwy. 9 - Little River area.

Summerville is nice. That would put you close to the Ladson flea market and Charleston.

Anderson is beautiful.

Lexington is ok and would put you in a central part of the state.

I don't have any advice for you but just wanted to say my gf's mom loves your wife's business!  The GF is from Elmira and her mom's still behind the iron curtain.  Freedom's calling brother, I escaped from NYC 2 years ago and haven't looked back.

If you are wanting to be 1 to 1.5 hours from Lexington/Columbia or Greenville (both places that you could sell your stuff well), then you have a whole lot of area to look for acreage.

I did a search recently similar, and found that my best bet for land and not being too far away from a major hospital system (for job) was in Greenwood SC.   I'm about 1 hour from Greenville, about 1.5 hours from Columbia.   Land is cheap, everyone is very gun friendly, taxes very low, a lot of house and land for your money.

Shoot me an IM with questions if I can help answer any about the upstate or midlands of SC.

yup...take it from a "fellow Northerner" heading to the Palmetto State for our retirement:

stash the big city "attitude" and don't expect to change everything "the way it was up North."

be decent, helpful, and above all, be honest in your dealings with everyone, and you'll fit in well.

manners and respect still count a lot.

we are heading for the outskirts of Greenville.

I had my wife read this and it brought a smile to her face when reading the part of your gf's mom loving her business.

My Mom lives in Elmira.

She had a wakeup call this past year after her husband died.  She decided she wanted a handgun for protection in the house.  She got so frustrated with the system that she gave up and one of my brothers hooked her up with a 20 ga. shotgun.

I told her that here in SC I can walk into a shop, say "I want one of those, one of those, and a couple of these", fill out the 4473s, hand over the $$ and I'm out the door with my hardware. (No NICS check since I have my CWP).

She now understands that gun control is more about control than it is about guns.
