Moved To Helena, MT about 6 months ago from the Dirty Jerz. As much as Hunterdon County, NJ is one of the best places (in NJ) to live because no one knows about it and its nowhere near 95, If you put lipstick on a pig, its still a pig.
I'm looking for a place to shoot on public land not too far from Helena where I can shoot at long range and also do some pistol exercise. If anyone knows a good place, I'd really appreciate the pointer.

Unfortunately, most of the close to town areas have been shutdown recently.

The North Hills BLM ground north of town was the best place to shoot close to town on public land. Last summer someone was shooting tannerite after things dried out and burnt the entire mountain range down. I got 12 hours of sleep I three days. I’m too old for that anymore. Lol.

The BLM has since put up a gate and closed the area down. There was a lot of mudflows/erosion after the fire. I assume it will be opened back up once they know the hillsides are stabilized. However, over the last decade the BLM (DNRC jurisdiction) has had a number of fires in that area from shooters. Additionally, folks don’t seem to know how to pick up after themselves. The place is pretty trashed. If/when they do open it up I am guessing they might try to restrict some of the past activities. Of course, now it’s safe from fire for a while.

There were a lot of folks that used to shoot up at McClellan Creek in the north end of the Elkhorns but the USFS shut that down a few years ago.

Folks still shoot north of York near the top of York Hill. There isn’t much in the way of long range shooting there.

There aren’t a lot of public places to shoot long range. You’re probably best to buy a membership to the Townsend range. You can shoot out to 1000 yards there. Prickly Pear range on MacDonald Pass only goes out to 300 yards. I believe the High Ore range near Basin goes to 600 yard.

Thanks for the info! I'm still grateful that there is a 1000 yard range somewhere close by. In NJ, it was almost $400/year for a 300 yard range that was an hour and a half away... If I was lucky with traffic.

Billings, I've been a lurker of GD since 2012 but never joined as I only had a Gmail account. Main collecting interest is Mauser Pocket pistols but I do have a couple of AR rifles.
