I recently got selected for promotion and the position I am seeking is in Belle Chasse st the NAS. I am looking for information the area, things to do, places to eat at, where to avoid, etc.
Is MSY the best airport to fly into. Can I Uber from there to Belle Chasse? Anybody know the area? I will travel there one week-end a month. |

I work in Belle Chasse, but not at the NAS.
Eating is easy. There's food everywhere. There's a good BBQ place nearish to the base, but I can't remember the name of it right now. As for the uber drive from the airport, its a bit of a ride depending on traffic. 30 minutes or more. |

Welcome to the best bank! (aka the West Bank of NOLA). Depending on traffic UBER is going to be a long ride out that way. May be better renting a car if you want to get out and about a lot. |

Lil G's Restaurant is right near the base on Hwy 23, and Zydeco's is a bit further up the highway back towards New Orleans. Both have great food at reasonable prices.
You will want a car of your own to get around as public transportation is non-existent in Belle Chasse, and Uber may be spotty that far outside of New Orleans. Trip from MSY to Calendar Field (very old name of the base) is at least 45 minutes on a good day. |

Will you be establishing LA residency? No, I would be a non resident. Eh. Not sure how much fun it will be then. Non residents have to "hunt" alligator with a licensed guide, and every guide I know of just wants their money quick and easy, so instead of taking people to try and bag a loose gator with a bow*, they just use lines. Meaning, the guide sets out baited lines the night before, and takes the "hunters" along with him to check the lines. When he gets to a hooked gator, he hands you a .22 pistol and holds the gator still while you shoot it in the head. I will ask around though, and see if anyone knows someone who will guide for actual hunting though. *Firearms are also legal, but not recommended, seeing as you are shooting at water. |

This is going to be my first week-end down there. I'll be staying in Harvey. Is there anything going on that I need to know about or things I need to check out? |

AAR for my last trip.
It's going to be hard to keep a Keto diet around here.
Ate at the restaurant attached to my hotel, (Lafittes Landing) and I can't really recommend them but I did try the BBQ across from the NAS in Belle Chasse and they were good as was Landry's Seafood, that was really good. Traffic wasn't as bad as I expected though I imagine that depends what is going on in the city. |

@scotchymcdrinkerbean
Was this the antique store you referenced in previous posts about places to see in NOLA? http://shop.cohenantiques.com/

You've had Salvos and Hwy 23 already, right. What about Adams catfish?
Thursday nights at 1830 we host a work out on the Gretna levee and have drinks and food at the Rivershack. Come to Algiers for breakfast at Toute de Suite....technically they serve breakfast all day, but Monday. |

When they're running, yeah. But you never know until you get to the levee.
When I was a kid, there was a proposal to build a bridge where the Chalmette ferry is. It would have linked I-510 to somewhere around the Woodland Highway that runs between the two Intracoastal Canal bridges. Politics and alleged mafia influence cancelled it. Then English Turn got built, so I guess a bridge will never happen there, but it would be an awesome time saver. |

| The Confederate Museum (aka Civil War Museum) is located literally across Camp Street from the WWII Museum. They have an unusually large collection, but it is not anywhere near as well curated as the WWII Museum. You take a self guided tour. Near the end of it is a video of film from a Civil War Veterans Parade from the early 20th Century. |

I'm staying at the Holiday Inn Tower for my Covid mobilization and finally got time to do a walk on the levee today and some to-go at the Rivershack. Been mobilized down here since the 3rd week in March, but just got moved to Gretna so the Navy could have isolation housing on base for their folks if needed. |
