Anyone else seen the photos of MDOT loading a cooler of beer?

I have no issue with that. Just getting ready for later. As long as they aren't operating a vehicle and are off from work, meh. Doesn't bother me at all.

I've done worse.

I tend to agree with this.

As long as they were authorized to be there (be it authorized personal use or a business need to be there, you would certainly be allowed to make personal purchases)

Maybe they were having a company party later?

Even if there is a specific policy against it, that is for MDOT to deal with, not the court of public opinion.

I do admit it looks bad to people who are looking for things to be upset about.

A lot of people are butthurt because this photo is from Pontotoc where they just went wet (late last year I think). "OMG law enforcement is buying devil water."

The last fleet manual I saw forbid the use of alcohol but didn't mention transportation.

Might have been on their way to the Ole Miss game.

Have had that pic texted by 3 different people.

They ended up at the game.  May have just been using the truck to get a good parking spot. LEOs get prime parking close to the stadium. Who knows?

No, not that at all.  Just don't use the company truck, especially the taxpayers' truck, for your personal business.  Picking up a loaf of bread on the way home or picking up the kids, etc., fine.  Icing down some beers in the taxpayers' truck (presumably using the taxpayers' gas) on the way to a college football tailgate party and game is not so fine.  The deed is not the bad thing.  It's the lack of judgement that is the problem.  Of course, if they were using the MDOT truck to get a nice parking spot, then that just makes it worse.

All could have been avoided with a little bit of DISCRETION!  i just wonder what the guy had to say to the ladies that were icing down the suds after he became aware of the pics.

Well, congrats to those women...they've made the morning news in Memphis.

It's on up there with my being flipped off by John Ford one evening on Riverside Drive...when he passed I noticed the "gov" tag on his car.

This.

What I was told is that the Officer and his entourage were from Iuka and were enroute to Oxford for the game. On their way through Pontotoc (assuming they came down 45 from Corinth through Tupelo to Hwy 6 through Pontotoc) they stopped at the Kangaroo and bought the beer and ice there.

I was also told that as soon as the photos went viral and MDOT was notified, the officer and his accompanying party was told to leave the game and return to Iuka immediately.

No word on what has transpired since, but according to what has been said, he did not have authorization to use the vehicle for personal use like going to the game, and that State LE vehicles are not to transport alcohol under any circumstance outside of evidence confiscation as part of their duty. I don't imagine this is going to turn out very good for the officer.

This is not going to go well for those involved. If they are lucky it will stay in the agency and the auditor's office will not get involved. If they are not lucky that Fuelman card abuse may come with a free set of bracelets to match the termination letter from MDOT. The state does not take the misuse of vehicles lightly, especially by LEOs in marked vehicles.
