with an overnight stay. Anything a Texan with a carry permit needs to know while he visits? |

Don't even stop for gas inside the city limits of Jackson---especially after dark.
Neighboring towns are OK. And if you stop and get out of your vehicle for gas or food most anywhere near Jackson, keep your gun on your body---not in your vehicle---just in case. You can probably drive 75 MPH OK on the interstate and not get stopped. Folks will pass you doing 80 to 90 MPH and you might get away with it, too. But the risk increases and the law will likely be out in force on the holiday weekend. |

Quoted: Vicksburg more than likely. Quoted: Quoted: So where are you stopping? Vicksburg more than likely. Wish I could recommend a place to eat there but honestly, I haven't ever found anything that great in Vburg. If you can, go ride thru the Vicksburg battlefield, it's worth the time if you are even somewhat interested in the Civil War. I'm on the other end of I-20 in Meridian. If you come thru here, let me know. |

I live in Vicksburg. Not sure what you care about.
The military park is not especially exciting to me, and yes my great grandfather fought here. There is an entry fee. If you go, make sure you have gas in the tank. It's like 22 miles around. If you like civil war history go to the Old Courthouse Museum downtown. There is a small entry fee to it, too. Gun shops are nothing special. A place named Hobie's is about as good as you will do here: http://hobiesoutdoorsports.com/ Pawn shops suck. Casinos will take your money. Restaurants are not particularly exciting---but it depends upon what you like to eat. A place downtown named Rusty's is pretty good for seafood. A new place named Newk's is OK for American food. A Mexican restaurant named El Sombrero is pretty good and pretty cheap: http://www.elsombrero.co/elsombrero--vicksburgms.html And we have all of the normal fast food places. |

This post makes me want to take the family on a trip down to Vicksburg.

Our locally owned and locally famous barbecue place is "Goldies". On the I-20 south frontage road.
It used to be good 40 years ago but I would not recommend it now. A family restaurant named "Rowdy's" has good fried catfish. (Don't get the thin, crispy fried catfish though.) There is a pretty good "all you can eat" Chinese place near the factory outlet mall, but I just don't care for Chinese food. Cracker Barrel is there, too, and pretty good. There are a few hole-in-the-wall places that serve a meat, 2 vegetables, bread, and tea for working men. |

Speaking from when I worked the area for DirecTV, any of the Super Junior stores would be right up your alley. |

There are 3 around Vicksburg but they are kind of out of the way. The one easiest to get to would be about a mile north of I-20 up Highway 61 on your right. It is a Chevron station. Super Junior 204 US-61 Vicksburg, MS 39183 (601) 636-2243 Some other stations do chicken and potato logs, too. Mostly, it will NOT be the stations that have pizza or Subway counters built-in. |
