My wife and I are planning to look at a house in Littleton, NH this Monday.  It would become a vacation, and future retirement home.

Anyone have anything good or bad to say about the area?

I know someone whom was an officer in Littleton. I'll ask him what he thinks of the area next time I see him.

Sounds like Littleton is a decent middle class neighborhood, but there are some fairly big drug issues in the town. It's a big town though so you ought to be able to find a nice quiet area.

Thank you for the info.  The house we are looking at is outside of town, but we would go into Littleton to shop, and things like that.

If there's anything specific, like a street, etc., feel free to PM me and I can run it by him.

Littleton is a decent town.  It does have some drug problems, but it's hard to find an area without that these days.  I live about a half hour from Littleton, so we go up there a couple times a month.  I'm also friends with some of the officers up there, and those in the surrounding towns.  Littleton has all the amenities you should need, and it's only a short drive to some beautiful country.  Franconia Notch is nearby, and it's beautiful to drive through there.

ETA:  If you want a nice quiet place without the headaches of the big city, you can't get much better than northern NH.

Not a bad town, the tax rate has been creeping up for several reasons.

Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Staples, and Lowes are all in town.

91 and 93 are close by.

Canada is only a little more than an hour away

Dalton is nice and Monroe too

My Brother moved to Lancaster, NH a few years ago. He is in a very rural setting on 25 acres. He shops in Littleton quite often.
His Brother and Sister-in-Law bought a lot and built a log home in Littleton about a year ago just outside of the main portion of town on top of a hill with a great view.
We've visited twice and both times spent some time in Littleton. IMO, nice small town. We were there this past June and there were a lot of out of town visitors (like us).
Chutter's candy store is a must visit when there. We had a nice lunch one day at the Renaissance Mills.
IMO, all in all a very nice area. We saw a lot of homes for sale in and around Littleton however we're not in the market.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this thread.

The house we saw outside of Littleton was very nice, but not ideal.  We went to lunch on Main street, and agree that it is a very nice small town.

We also looked at a house near New London, in central NH, off of 89.  The town is a very small town in proximity to a small college, and we really liked the area.

My wife and I haven't decided what to do, although we are leaning toward the New London area, although perhaps not the specific house we saw.

I'm really looking forward to spending more time in NH, although a full-time move is unfortunately still years away.
