I'm flying into Boston to visit my parents, who don't live in the city. As a LEO, I typically carry when I leave the house. I know MA law is strict, but does anybody know how the local PD would treat an out of state LEO wanting to carry in the state? I know I fall under LEOSA, but I don't feel like hemming myself up anyhow.

Another question concerns bringing mags into the state. I carry a Shield, but my dad brought his G19 into the state when he moved. He left the mags with me because of MA law. He took his firearms class, and was apparently told he could have them, since he moved from out of state. Can I fly the mags in and give them back?

LEOSA is respected here in MA.

Possession of any >10 rd pistol/rifle mag (mfd after 9/13/1994) is a felony in MA. Only LEOs are exempt from this law.

Like most firearms instructors and LEOs in MA they know very little of MA gun laws but spout stuff that can get innocent folks long jail sentences and prohibited person status.

Instructors, LEOs and gun dealers in MA are the worst for valid info on MA gun laws.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'm checking a bag after all. And I guess I have some reading to do since I've heard Boston is pretty much off limits.

I also have to start saving for a new G19 to use my new mags...

Where did you hear that Boston is off limits? You specifically want to CCW in Boston, trust me on that.

It was not a legal source, I just heard that Boston was more restrictive than the rest of the state. Kind of like how New York City is somehow more restrictive than the state of New York.

Boston has had an AWB since 1989, but it only affects possession of long guns in the City and has never been enforced.

No city restriction on handguns at all.

State law makes it clear that LEOs can possess new large-capacity mags and new "AWs" in the state, this change occurred in 2014 legislation.

Enjoy your visit here.

In terms of issuing LTCs to residents, yes, Boston is one of the more restrictive communities in the Commonwealth through the city's use of restrictions and license application process. However, anybody who can legally carry in Massachusetts can carry in the City of Boston.

Add Brockton, Taunton, Lynn, Stoughton, Avon, Randolph, Dorchester, and Jamaica Plain to the places to always CC in MA.

Agreed! Dorchester and Jamaica Plain are parts of Boston, so covered earlier. Whatever you do, don't stumble into Roxbury or Mattapan (aka Murderpan) while in Boston . . . they are shooting galleries with no backstops.

Randolph has turned into Mattapan South or Brockton North! I grew up there when it was a nice suburb, but it is downright scary these days. The Randolph Police Chief who retired ~5 years ago was married to a classmate of mine, so I've known him for ~40 years (I work on the RHS reunion committee with her until she became terminally ill). He's close to 10 years younger than I am and when I visited him shortly before his retirement his hair was totally white! That's what Randolph can do to you (if you survive)!!

My dad works in Lynn (it's a good job that makes up for driving through Lynn, I guess), but I avoided it. I went into Boston without incident. Although the homeless man begging directly in the middle of traffic caught me off guard. As did the lack of any visible local police.

Along with Fitchburg, Gardner, Lowell, Springfield, Lawrence, Worcester, Chelsea, and Charlestown.
