Hi Everyone,
Just completed course for LTC at Mass Firearms and put in app at my local PD yesterday. Have gone to a range with a friend who is a LTC to try some of his hand guns. Will visit a few ranges to try some others before deciding which one to purchase. So far I like the S&W MP Range Kit but also would like an AR-15. I have seen the S&W AR-15T on the Four Seasons (in Woburn) website and like it. Was wondering what is not allowed on an AR-15 in MA ? I know the stock can not be adjustable or have a silencer on end. But is one of those forward vertical grips on the barrel OK ? Also what are some other general things not allowed on a semi auto handgun ? Saw a Ruger I liked ( called a lite ) that looks nice but was told because of the threaded barrel on end it is not allowed in MA :-( Thanks for all your replies ... Rob ... |

The Massachusetts assault weapons ban mirrors the former federal assault weapons ban. In addition to named models, the following feature-counts also define a firearm as an assault weapon. A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any two of the following: A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon. A folding or telescoping stock. A grenade launcher or flare launcher. A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; A bayonet lug A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any two of the following: A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor A second handgrip. A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning his or her hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel. The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip. A semiautomatic shotgun that has two of the following: A folding or telescoping stock. A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, The ability to accept a detachable magazine. Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder. On a long gun, a vert grip is not an assault weapon feature. The threaded barrel is not what keeps the 22/45 Lite from being sold by dealers in Mass. The threaded barrel is one feature, and thus the pistol is not an assault weapon. You can buy one (for a premium) in a private sale. That said, while other 22/45 configurations are on the EOPS list, the Lite is not. (In addition to being on the EOPS list, handguns sold by Mass dealers also have to meet the AG's requirements). [There are a number of handguns which despite being on the EOPS list are alleged not to meet the AG's standards. Glocks are a good example. One exemption to the AG's requirements is pistols that predate Oct 1998- which is why dealers can sell pre-1998 Glocks but not new ones]. You can have as many features as you would like on a preban firearms, meaning that the firearm was made before 13 SEP 1994. Note that you can not possess large capacity ammunition feeding devices made after 13 Sep 1994 even with your LTC. |

That's why my post read two or more enumerated features makes it an assault weapon. Also, note that the pre-qualifier (detachable magazine) does not require that magazine to be large capacity. Any detachable magazine counts. That said, any assault weapon, regardless of potential capacity becomes a large capacity firearm by definition. |
