I want to get into ice fishing. What do I need to know? Not looking to spend a lot of money.
Thanks, HTF. |

What kind of ice fishing are you looking to do?How much are you looking to spend? Don't know yet. Probably the kind where I pull up brookies, togue, and salmon like other people say they do. Don't care if I'm in a shack or not. Borrow a power auger and get some old fashioned tip ups. Under 100 bucks including beer. This sounds good to me. Recommended beer/whiskey for ice fishing? |

Shipyard Export from the keg
plus Jager and Rumpleminze to keep warm Last year we tried curling (with the brooms and the heavy stones) to pass time. In the past we've built a large trebuchet and launched flaming rocks, all sorts of potato guns, ice bars, you name it we catch junk fish a trout about every 20 years |

Sounds like I just need to hook up with some experts. What do you use for bait and where are you fishing that you only catch junk fish? |

Borrow a power auger and get some old fashioned tip ups. Under 100 bucks including beer. Are most fish caught jigging / on the pole or with tip-ups? I think if I were to get into it (and I consider it every few years), I would be bored to tears waiting for the tip ups (curling or not). I think I'd want a line in the water myself. |

For a beginner I would say your best chances are with tipups, however a properly equipped and experienced jigger can pull a good pile of fish out of the water. A hardcore jigger will most likely deploy a sonar to see what he is fishing for. Most guys get started with the basics and then it becomes an obsession to get more and better stuff, kinda like shooting. |

Well, you haven't really ice fished in Maine till you've fired a pickerel out of a potato gun. ![]() I rost too, I'm thinking of making that my new sig line, with wyatt1 permission of course. You might as well, seeing as I don't have sigline capability at the moment!
