Woman Stabbed In Unprovoked Attack In Asbury Park Monday, Police Say ASBURY PARK, NJ A woman was stabbed by a man she did not know on Monday, Labor Day, in Asbury Park, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago said Wednesday. A local Asbury Park man has been arrested and charged in what police are calling an unprovoked attack. The woman remains in critical condition. At 2:37 Monday afternoon, Asbury Park Police responded to the 500 block of Asbury Avenue for a report of a stabbing. This is a residential neighborhood, near Trinity Episcopal Church, and only a few blocks from the bustling Asbury Park boardwalk. Police say the man approached the woman from behind and began to stab her, continuing to stab her until a witness intervened. The man and woman did not know each other and the attack was unprovoked, said a spokesman for the county prosecutor. When officers arrived, several bystanders were giving aid to the woman. She suffered multiple stab wounds and was rushed to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition. Travis A. Cavanaugh, 39, of Asbury Park was detained at the scene and arrested. He is charged with first-degree attempted murder and two counts of weapons possession. |

Bus drivers want more security after colleague attacked by 7 juveniles in Paterson Police say a bus driver was attacked by seven juveniles at the Broadway Bus Terminal in Paterson on Wednesday afternoon. A new photograph showing the aftermath of the assault was shared exclusively with News 12 from a bystander. It shows the bus driver lying on the ground after Wednesday's attack. Authorities say the driver is in critical condition. Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh, who also saw the picture, said it was "gruesome." "They left that man for dead. That was a heinous and horrific act," the mayor says. A spokesperson for New Jersey Transit says the driver operates a bus on the 171 line. Local bus drivers told News 12 that the security presence at the Broadway Bus Terminal is sporadic. They say they want more officers on duty at the station. "We've spoken to New Jersey Transit bus drivers and they feel like they don't feel safe anywhere. And if they want to coordinate efforts, we'd be more than willing to have our police department work with theirs," Sayegh says. The injured driver was treated on scene by EMTs before being taken to the hospital. There's no word on any arrests and police haven't said what exactly led up to the altercation. Paterson again. 13-year-old arrested with handgun in Paterson PATERSON, N.J. A 13-year-old was arrested Friday by detectives from the Paterson Police Department after being found in possession of a semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine, according to a statement from the department. This is the second firearm-related arrest for the juvenile, who was previously taken into custody last year after accidentally shooting himself in the leg. The police emphasized the importance of community involvement in maintaining public safety. Gun-Toting, Wanted Man Leads Red Bank Police On Foot Chase RED BANK, NJ An armed man was arrested Sunday afternoon following a police chase on Coopers Bridge, Red Bank Police Captain Michael Frazee said. Wayne Accoo, 40, of Asbury Park, was arrested on an outstanding warrant from the Red Bank Municipal Court around 1:48 p.m. on Sunday, Frazee said. When Accoo was told to put his hands behind his back, Frazee said Accoo fled from police and started to head south on Coopers Bridge towards Red Bank. Officer Chris Fuentes caught up to Accoo, who resisted arrest and tried to grab something from his front pocket, police said. Officer Piero Vescio helped Fuentes secure Accoo and they found a .22 caliber handgun in Accoo's front pocket and 33 tabs of a suspected controlled and dangerous substance in his backpack, police said. "Officers noticed the threat of Mr. Accoo making attempts to get into his pocket and were able to gain control of his hands, eliminating that threat," Frazee said. "Not being able to gain control of Mr. Accoo may have resulted in someone getting seriously injured." Accoo was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, certain person not to possess a weapon, resisting arrest, hindering apprehension, obstructing the administration of the law, aggravated assault on police, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance, Frazee said Patch.com |

Violent N.J. home invasion robbery linked to national gang, cops say A home invasion robbery and attack last week at an Atlantic County residence has led to the arrest of four men police say are linked to a violent Dominican-American gang. Woman reunited with her puppy after dog stolen at gunpoint in NJ; suspect charged TRENTON, New Jersey (WPVI) -- A dog owner was reunited with her 4-month-old puppy after a man stole the dog at gunpoint in New Jersey. It happened on October 11 along the 200 block of Academy Street in Trenton. Police say Brian Howard held up the woman while she was walking her dog, Nola.
