Feelings on whether firearms lower the risk of a household member getting hurt by an intruder are highly partisan; two-thirds (65 percent) of Democrats believe it either slightly lowers the risk or doesn't lower the risk at all, while two-thirds (62 percent) of Republicans believe the opposite. Women (55 percent), people in the highest income bracket (57 percent), and those who completed some type of graduate work (64 percent) are all more likely than their counterparts to believe a firearm in the home does little to nothing to lower the risk of an intruder harming someone in the household. link |

Police: Man tried to stab UPS driver who refused to give him a ride A Gloucester County man is facing charges for allegedly trying to stab a UPS driver who would not allow him to ride in the truck. Monroe Township police say they were initially called to the Madison Court Apartment building for a call about a woman who was assaulted. Police say when they arrived, the suspect identified as Ernest Peterson had left the area and had jumped into a UPS truck. Police say that they found the truck a short time later after it had struck a curb and was stopped partially in the grass. Officials say officers found Peterson on top of the UPS driver, trying to stab the driver with a knife. Officials say that Peterson demanded that the driver give him a ride to the front of the apartment complex, and then became irate when the driver refused. Peterson faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault. The UPS driver was treated for minor cuts. link |

Rattled Haddonfield residents form safety group after recent break-ins HADDONFIELD, New Jersey (WPVI) -- A citizen-organized group is mobilizing in the wake of residential break-ins in Haddonfield, New Jersey. The group called "Haddonfield Safe" held a meeting Wednesday night. Organizers say about 100 people showed up, concerned about the crimes happening in their town. In some cases, suspects are breaking into homes and stealing money and cars. Home surveillance video obtained by Action News shows a group breaking into a Haddonfield home, banging loudly until the door opens and they go inside. Boy, 15, Robbed At Gunpoint Outside Ridgewood Stop & Shop A 15-year-old Ridgewood boy was robbed at gunpoint outside the village Shop & Stop after arriving for what he thought was a sale that he'd made online, authorities said. The boy told police he brought $300 worth of clothing to the parking lot of the Franklin Avenue supermarket after cutting an online deal shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, Sgt. John A. Ward said. Instead, the teen said, he was accosted by four men who appeared to be 18 to 20 years old, one of them armed with a handgun. Springfield Police Arrest Two Suspects After Armed Robbery Outside TD Bank on Morris Ave. On May 17, the Springfield Police Department responded to a call to the TD Bank located at 540 Morris Ave. for an armed robbery. On the officers' arrival, it was found that the victim was attempting to complete a Facebook MarketPlace transaction, meeting the prospective buyers at that location. As the victim remained outside the bank, he was approached by three male suspects who brandished handguns and robbed him of the watch he was there to sell, along with his belongings. As the suspects were leaving the scene, two witnesses were able to capture still photos of their vehicle. This information was provided to surrounding agencies. The vehicle was observed by a Springfield police officer as well as an off-duty Millburn detective. After a pursuit, the vehicle came to a stop on I-78 East, at which point the suspects bailed out from the car and took off on foot. A foot pursuit was initiated and, with the assistance of surrounding jurisdictions, two male suspects were apprehended. Charges were placed against the males for first-degree robbery, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, attempted carjacking, eluding and resisting arrest. link |

The gunman had been outside with the owner of Jewelry Repair and Design on Cherry Tree Farm Road just before following them inside around 2 p.m., police said. That's when the suspect pulled out a handgun. The suspect is described by police as white male, approximately 5'7" and in his late 20s to early 30s, with facial hair. Bloomfield Tesla Driver Arrested In Montclair Road Rage Shooting, Police Say A 42-year-old Bloomfield man was arrested and charged with firing gunshots at another vehicle during a road rage incident in Montclair on Monday, June 17, authorities said. Nelson Santos, who was driving a white Tesla, unsuccessfully tried to overtake the victims in their vehicle, and then continued following them until they pulled over at New Street and Washington Street just before 10 p.m., Montclair police said in a release. Santos pulled up, got out of his car and pulled out a handgun, police said. The victim attempted to drive away, but Santos then fired two rounds at the victim's vehicle, police said. One round struck the rear windshield while another struck the rear bumper, police said. Santos was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and remanded to Essex County Jail. Surfside Pier in Wildwood briefly evacuated after man pulls gun: Police WILDWOOD, New Jersey (WPVI) -- Police evacuated Surfside Pier along the Wildwood boardwalk on Saturday night. This happened sometime between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. A spokesperson for Morey's Piers, which owns Surfside Pier, said the evacuation happened as a precaution at the request of police. Men Broke Into Meadowlands Plaza Hotel Room While Guests Slept: Police SECAUCUS, NJ Secaucus Police say two men armed with a gun broke into a hotel room at Meadowlands Plaza Hotel in February. The men claimed they were police officers, and demanded cash from the sleeping hotel guests. One victim alleges they pulled out a handgun and threatened to "pistol whip" the victims. The two men fled with cash from the victim, and some of their personal belongings. Secaucus Police were called there for a 911 call of an armed robbery. After a five-month-long investigation, members of the Secaucus Police Department Detective Division and Anti-Crime Unit identified the suspects as Cristopher Molina Herrera, 30, and Rikelvin DeLeon Diaz, 33, both of Newark. Secaucus Police detectives arrested Molina Herrera at his place of employment in Clifton on June 27. The next day, June 28, Secaucus Police arrested Diaz at his place of employment in Elizabeth. Both arrests took place without incident. Both men were charged with Robbery [2C:15-1a(1)] and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery [2C:5-2/2C:15-1a(1)]. They remain at the Hudson County Jail. link |

When an official examined the body lying on the sidewalk between Tilton and Layton Avenues, it was observed that the victim was possibly African-American. The body was removed at about 10:30am. Rutgers Student Carjacked While Sitting In Car The student said he was sitting inside his car, which was parked on the College Avenue campus, when two masked men approached the car: NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ A Rutgers student was carjacked in New Brunswick city center Friday night, Aug. 2, said Rutgers campus police. The student said he was sitting inside his car, which was parked on the College Avenue campus, specifically in Lot 30 (126 College Avenue in New Brunswick). Two masked men approached the vehicle, displayed a weapon (the type of weapon was not named) and demanded he hand over the car keys. The student complied and the perpetrators drove off in his gray Toyota Rav4. They were last seen on Ray Street driving toward Easton Avenue. For one, was the dog attacking any persons or was it fighting another dog? The two persons involved thought the dog was being aggressive to the woman. What did they mean by aggressive? Was the dog barking, snarling, jumping on the woman? Did he bite or scratch her or simply smell her camel toe? We don't know. If it was only attacking another dog, then the guy couldn't legally shoot the dog because in NJ animals are considered property and you can't defend property by shooting a gun. I know it sux, especially if you're ever walking your little dog and bigger dog attacks it. In any case, the man should've kept his mouth shut and let his lawyer do the talking for him. The same thing we all should do if we ever have to use our guns to defend ourselves. |

New Jersey woman hit by stray bullet while sitting in bed; suspect arrested - Gloucester city It happened around 10:50 p.m. on the 600 block of Hunter Street. Police say 51-year-old Francisco Griffin opened fire on the block while arguing with a woman. Video obtained by Action News shows a woman walking to her car and then a gunshot being fired. The stray bullet traveled across the street to a second-floor window and struck 67-year-old Deborah Strang in her bed. "I sat up and I heard a bang. My husband came running from his room. He said, 'Did you hear that?'" recalled Strang who immediately realized her arm was bleeding. She says the bullet hit her window, some pillows and her mattress before it ricocheted off the TV and hit her. "The blood is pouring. I pulled my hand away, and when I did, the bullet fell on the floor. And my husband picks it up and says, 'You been shot,'" adds Strang. Griffin was charged with second-degree possession of weapon, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree aggravated assault, and fourth-degree criminal mischief. link |
