As some of you know I'm putting the final touch on an AR-15 I built for my father as a Christmas gift and I appreciate all the help I've received in this forum. Dad is coming down next week to Georgia to spend some time with the family; and were going shooting as well. We'll transfer the AR to his name at my FFL after shooting it. My question is: I'm having a compensator permanently pinned and welded at a local shop this week and the muzzle device is a Smith Enterprise "Good Iron" compensator that IS capable of accepting a suppressor. He does NOT have a suppressor nor does he plan on getting one. I just want to make sure that THIS compensator is not going to be a problem because it can accept a suppressor. I just want to keep him legal and make sure all NJ laws are followed as for him to enjoy his first and only new AR-15... I've ground the bayonet lug off the FSB: pinned the adjustable stock in the half way position: and gotten him 5 or so (15) round mags for his new 16" barreled carbine.

ETA: Does he need a New Jersey Firearms I.D. card before taking possession of this as well? I'm still not 100% clear on that one. If he does then I'll make sure he obtains one before putting this rifle in his name. Then I will mail it up to his local FFL for pick up. Thanks for the help fellas! I've lived in Georgia most of my life and our laws are very lax here regarding this stuff. My parents just moved to North Jersey last year and this is all so new to us... I appreciate your help and thanks!

That muzzle brake should be fine, it doesn't have any threads for the suppressor which is what is banned. Plenty of legal brakes can act as suppressor mounts since there are suppressors like the Gemtech Halo that can mount to almost anything.

Yes he will need an FPID to take possession of it from the dealer.

Thanks for the fast reply Mak0... Where should I direct him to start the process for the FPID procedure??? Any idea of how long the process will take? Thanks again Mak0 and other ARFcom members...

He needs to apply at his local PD. He can download the forms from the state police website and fill them out at home. The time varies greatly from town to town, expect at least a 1-2 month wait.

OP - he will need to fill out the following forms (print and sign two copies of each):
http://www.njsp.org/info/pdf/firearms/sts-033.pdf
http://www.njsp.org/info/pdf/firearms/sp-066.pdf
Fill out, but do not sign the mental health form until he is at the police station (signature needs to be witnessed).  At that point, they will provide him with the info he needs to set up his fingerprinting appointment.  Fingerprinting is now done by a 3rd party, and he will need to schedule the appointment.

Appreciate you reaching out, asking questions, and doing it right. Most from other states would just walk away and not deal with us in NJ because of our restrictive idiocy. Thanks for not giving up on us!
