I remember reading an article awhile back that estimated 0.5% of NJ residents own guns, so doing the math that is around 44,100 people.

My NJ FPID card number is 6-digits and starts with a 3, if that means anything.  Not sure if the numbers are sequential, random, or coded for issuing agency.  Nonetheless, they haven't as of yet felt the need to go to 7 digits.

That is your SBI number. Everyone who is fingerprinted gets one. The NJSP should be able to provide the number of FID cards issued in the state.

As stated, the NJSP should have that. Now, will they tell you? Thats the question.

A lot more than there was 2 years ago, a lot less than most other "free" states and unfrotunately A LOT less than you might think.  From the small sample I have access to, lately the number increases daily, but its still not anywhere near the kind of number we need in order to affect any change based on the number itself; if that's what your getting at.  Nowadays, this whole country revolves around pleasing and appeasing small but loud special interest groups.  We cater to the weak minority because its the politically correct thing to do and we're affraid of their volume if we don't.  The problem here in NJ is that we as gun owners are small and quiet.  There aren't enough of us that place enough priority in our freedom to make enough noise to matter.  Couple that with the fact that over 50% of the state's tax base is employed by the state and you start to realize that its not in some people's best financial interest to make noise and possibly "bight the hand that feeds them."

There were 39k hunting license, 8k senior, and 16k all around sportsman sold in 2011.  So at least 63k.  I would say at least 3 or 4 times that.

Right from the state.

I know a lot more gun owners that are not hunters.  Also how many hunters didn't hunt last year, or only bow hunted?  I think there are a lot more gun owners than people realize.  I know some that don't have FPID cards.  They either inherited the guns or moved from out of state with them.

Then you should convince them to get FID cards.  The more number there are, the more the crooks....er I mean politicians will pay attention.  Numbers still mean nothing without a voice though, sad to say, but it's the truth.  Gun owners in NJ have been jeti mind fucked into being scared to russstle the feathers for so long that it's become the common culture.  Just look around on this board alone and see all the fear that harbors in some gun owners minds, not that it's their fault.  I can't blame some of them with the way things are here.
