Worse than red-light cameras (which are only recording when the light is red) check out all those new tall poles with cameras on motorized swivel mounts.  Those feed back to State run monitoring facilities and are monitored people.  The justification sold to the sheople is that they are there to “observe traffic conditions.”  George Orwell was 99.9% right; he just got the year wrong.

Next time you drive anywhere in NJ, pay attention to how many motor mounted remote-control camera you see.  They are watching you, and I am not paranoid.

If it's of the back of your vehicle, they cannot confirm, nor prove, YOU were in fact the operator of the vehicle at the time.  Let alone the whole right on red thing if it's not posted as prohibited.

This is one of the reasons I don't care for them.  They send you a fine with no DMV points attached for that reason.  Now if another person is stopped by LE and written for a red light violation they recieve points on their DL for the same offense.  I assume that you can go to court and tell the judge the person driving was not you but the follow up question is an obvious one.  The camera that has been quoted in our town would take multiple pictures of the vehicle before, during, and exiting the intersection violation.  That may be a reason why they are mounted higher to view the entire intersection.  The only fair thing about them is that if you commit the violation you get a ticket.  No special consideration given other than active emergency vehicles.  So far we don't have any in my town.  Towns use them to generate revenue but they should only be at intersections that have higher than normal collision rates.

I got one of those tickets over the winter.  It was snowing and I went to stop but rather instead I started sliding.  Rather than loosing control, I took my foot off the brake, held the horn down and went through the intersection as the light turned red.  I think I did the right thing but the camera disagreed.  If that thing wasn't posted in the middle of a well populated city, they would be a 12ga slug through it.

but that dosen't matter in this state.  being innocent until proven guilty is going the way of the dinosaur in this country is seems.

there's one part of the law that basically states that the owner is responsible for safe operation of the vehicle.  so, they interpret that to mean that if you don't rat out the driver if it's not you, you get the fine.

so basically, you the accused has to go in front of a judge and prove your innocence.

at least that's what I've heard.

simple fact is, towns use them to generate money.  thats all.

someone I know got red light camera ticket in philly.  never paid it.  all he has to do is avoid a parking ticket in the city and nothing will happen to him.  get a parking ticket, i assume he gets booted and towed.

I am also against car boots, and traffic cameras (not even speed cameras, but I am vehemently against them)

The cameras on the tall poles are really good ones.  I knew a guy who has used them before.  he could read the menu in the restaurant across the circle when people were holding them up ordering from the camera, he claims.

at least around here, they put up big signs warning people of the camera usually.

I got a photo/radar speeding ticket in Tempe, AZ in 1998.  Thought to myself, I live in NJ, I’ll never be in Tempe again… screw ‘em.  Time passes… I totally forget about it.  In 2006, my rental car got clipped by some yahoo while I was on a business trip in Phoenix.  I called the Phoenix cops to get a police report for the car rental company.  The warrant for my arrest came up and they hauled my butt to Tempe.  I spent 16 hours in custody, was humiliated in front of business colleagues, and it cost me close to $2,000 before it was all said and done.

Tell your friend to pay his ticket.

There's nothing more ridiculous than getting a ticket from a machine and even as a Police Officer I think the cameras are a gigantic infringement on constitutional rights.  How does one face his accuser in court when his accuser is a computer?  There have been plans in the works to put one of these at a very busy intersection in my jurisdiction and while the projected earnings from it are astronomical and very likely could pull the town out of the red and provide revenue for added services; the concept is disturbing and actually kind of insulting to me.  Police Officers legally have discretion over only one aspect of law enforcement and that's traffic enforcement.  The law provides every sworn officer the right to decide the issuance of a summons, warning or nothing at all.  Every other aspect of Law Enforcement is dictated by the written word of the law and Officers have no discretion under that law.  In other words, if you break a criminal law in the view of an officer (or there is probable cause to believe you broke the law) the officer has no choice under that law, but to arrest and charge you for that violation.  Traffic enforcement is completely up to the officer and these red light cameras remove that discretion, human empathy and totality of circumstance all in the name of revenue.

On a positive side, the Department of Community Affairs is all over the towns that want them and is currently limiting the actual amount of them that the DOT can approve in a given year.  There is also a mandated time period where the cameras must be used ONLY to issue warnings in order to alert motorists of their existence.  Once that time period is over, they begin to issue summons' whether you received a warning in the past or not.  They also mandate that the cameras are accompanied by specific identifying signage and characteristics.  Lastly, they must take a clear picture of the driver, rear of the vehicle and the front of the vehicle.
If you want to keep these things from going up at every intersection, I suggest you take the time to let you elected officials (and the Department of Community Affairs) know about it.  Starting with your local government and going all the way up the ladder.

I have been a cop for almost 20 years now, and our freedoms are just erroding away.  The courts and legislators are now using a jack hammer to take down the wall of freedom.  I became a cop to stop criminals, but it is set up now to arrest those law abiding citizens that make minor mistakes (IE: domestic, gun, self protections and traffic laws). But try to put a drug dealer or child molester in jail, and the tables are turned on the cop. The losers are the law abiding tax payers.  It is time to get out of NJ.

but i know for a fact that parking tickets are civil matters to the city of philadelphia.  says so right on the ticket.  I paid it cause next time (accidents happen with things like this), i would get my car towed.

Except that the yellow light time is often shortened to catch you off guard.  At the intersection of Raymond Blvd and Broad Street in Newark I can confirm this.  Pedestrian timer counting down time left to cross magically lost five seconds after the red light camera was installed.  I sat and watched the light, sure enough, it became red a couple seconds before you expected it to.

Not to mention other times when it is safer, or even legally required, to go through a red.  For example, during funeral processions or when you would otherwise lose control of your car like the poster above mentioned.  The camera will still ticket you in both cases.

About 6 years back I received a ticket in the mail from the state for going through an EZPass toll plaza and not having an EZPass transponder for the system to register.  Problem was, I never committed said act.  I do not have the EZPass in my vehicle, but I never go through the EZPass lanes.  with the notice was a black and white photo of the back of my vehicle as it exited the toll booth, roughly 3" by 3".  Here's the kicker, it was not my vehicle.  Not even close.  I drive a mid nineties chevy blazer suv, the picture was of a volvo station wagon.  Not even close.  And, the tag on teh volov was utterly and completely imcomprehendible.  I went back and forth with the agency responsible for sending these notices out for 8 months before they finally got me a supervisor that knew his ass from a hole in the ground and realized there was no possible way that could have been my vehicle, let alone me behind the wheel.

These cameras are not there for anyone's safety, period.  They are there to help the state and locals generate more money than what they are already getting from us through blatant armed robbery.

What he said. No one has addressed the fact that I got my ticket in New Brunswick for going through a red because it was the right thing to do.  Should I have slammed on my breaks instead and spun out and hit oncoming traffic all in the name of attempting to avoid a ticket?  The officers in New Brunswick told me I shouldn't even bother going to court because the judge doesn't care and I will be assessed court fees on top of the fine.  You know what the worst part was?  I called the ticketing agency to see if they had a telepresence in the court (right to face my accuser) and I got stuck talking to some Indian half way on the other side of the world that was supposedly based in Arizona.
