Ugh!  We had a little excitement here in Lumberton over the weekend.
http://www.nj.com/gloucester-county/index.ssf/2011/07/girlfriends_husband_charged_in.html
The short strokes are: Joe, a well-known and generally well-liked, good natured, fun loving, would give you the shirt off his back, working-class father of 4 is currently going through the initial stages of a divorce.  He found out that his soon-to-be-ex-wife had a new boyfriend.  He lost his mind, grabbed his Glock, stole a car, and drove down to Woodbury Heights to confront him. They got into a struggle, the boyfriend ended up getting shot twice (leg and finger, he will be fine).  Joe went on the lam in PA after a car chase with PoPo.  They caught him in Philly and he is going down big time.  People are saying it could be 20+ years.  Sad sad sad story.

Needless to say, this has been a topic of conversation in Lumberton.  What has surprised me however, and why I am bringing this up in this forum, are all the cries for stricter gun control that have precipitated from this.  And, the cries are coming from good decent people, many Republicans, who I call my friends and neighbors.  These are not the Socialists or haters of liberty that we always rant about on this forum.
I was shocked to learn their positions.  I was shuttering to think what would happen if these people ever found out how many firearms I own, or how many rounds of ammo I have.

Here are some of the most notable comments:

“He’s got 4 kids.  He shouldn’t have been allowed to have a gun in the house.”

“I didn’t even know that Joe had a gun.  My son’s been over at his house a hundred times.  I would never have allowed it.  Why isn’t this kind information posted on the internet somewhere I can check; you know, like a Megan’s list for guns.”

“Was it legal?  If it was, then it just goes to show that it doesn’t matter whether guns are legally owned or not.  If it wasn’t it just goes to show that it’s too easy to get guns on the street.”

“How did he even get a gun?  You can’t just go buy one from a store.  I didn’t think that Joe knew those kinds of people.”
[Coming from a woman who does 90% of her shopping at Nordstrom’s and Wegman’s.]

Needless to say, I have really gained some insight into the gun-control mentality over the past few days.   Sentiments like those above are what drive laws.  When enough people say “there ought to be a law,” they make one.

I am not sure why I am posting this story.  Maybe I just needed to vent.  I also just thought it might be interesting to see how deeply gun control is engrained into the culture and the social psychology of the people in this state.

I guess they forgot to mention that the car he was driving (running from the "popo") was also stolen...  Yeah, Joe was the model citizen...  He also crashed the stolen car, jumping a guard rail with it into someone's backyard, and continued to run on foot through back yards; causing two towns to be pretty much locked down and 5 Police agencies in Camden County spending hours and countless amounts of resources trying to track him down.

The people complaining don't mention any of that at all.  Forget the fact that he wasted tens of thousands of dollars in tax payer's money while inconveniencing two entire communities and could have killed an entire family had the car not slid on the guard rail and veered away from the house it was headed for.  How the hell could a "great" guy like Joe have gotten his hands on a 3500 lbs rolling piece of steel?  Cars need to go!

Me too.  What's worse, I had to just sit there and take it.  I wanted to bark them into the corner, but I had to force myself to be silent.  I tried to be congnizant of the fact that people were my friends and neighbors and they were still comming to terms with the events.  It was not the appropriate time to try to evangalize them.

Is it even possible to change someone's mind when they have such rediculous opinions?

As a gun owner in NJ since 1973 the comments don't phase me at all. Typical sheep response.

Yes, it is.  A friend of mine went from, "guns are bad - if we could just get rid of them all, the world would be a better place", to asking me to help him pick out a home defense gun for himself.  It took a couple of years, and a few range trips, but he finally saw the light.

I hear you Tom488.  There is no better evangalist than an afternoon of blasting soda cans with an M4.
We should all commit to investing 1,000 rounds per year into converting our Libral freinds.  Maybe we should designate the first Saturday of each month as "Take a Liberal to the Range Day"

I agree.  That is the typical New Jersey Fascist Hypocrite for you: “Those people shouldn’t be allowed to do that!”  “We need LAWS to make those people do what I want them to do!”

Personally, I am very PROUD to be one of “those people.”

Its certainly not the uneducated, head burrying, sheeple blog posters say that surprises me at all.  What baffles me is the complete failure to recognize the lack of conviction of the most basic of violent crimes and the ignorant clammering to simply add more laws that will not be enforced upon the true criminals of our state.  I can knock on a hundred doors off the top of my head, where people are home enjoying freedom with criminal records longer than the Mississippi, yet legislature continues to attempt to force more redundant, unnecessary and common sense lacking laws onto the otherwise law abiding citizens of the state.  Dont demand that the courts do their jobs by putting life long criminals where they belong, just cry until a new hot topic law can be signed with no intension or even resource to enforce it.
