Only if it's in post-ban configuration, only if the magazines are 15 rounds or less, and only if you have a NJ Firearms ID card.  Since I'm assuming the range you'd want to bring it to is not registered with the NJ state police as an actual target range, none of the transportation exceptions would cover you to be in possession of a rifle.  Therefore, possession of the rifle would not be legal without an NJ Firearms ID card.

take a look at the NJSP website concerning:

Please excuse me as I have just read this as if the rifle is a post-ban(can you not own pre-bans?)and you must have a NJ Firearms Card to even shoot(we have kinda the same As you must have
a valid hunting licence to shoot at a Wild Life Management range)!

I want to sell a pre-ban Colt Sporter and don't know where and how to do it in good taste!

Did they change something in NJ in the past few years?

I used to attend the Jersey shoots several years ago with my NJ legal rifles/pistols and never had a FID card.

No, they didn't change anything. You DO NOT NEED an FID to possess an NJ-legal firearm. However you do need one to buy handgun ammunition.

OP, NJ's AWB predated the federal ban by 2 years, and had no Pre-ban provision, nor did it have a sunset provision as the fed ban did.  You cannot possess a pre-ban configuration AR, or ANY rifle that carries "Colt AR-15" markings on the lower.

Guys....  let's slow down here.  The OP specifically asked about bringing his rifle to a "private range".  That's what makes his situation different than, say, bringing a rifle to an NRA-sanctioned match.  To me, "private range" means "friend's back field".

We know that general possession of a rifle is illegal in NJ without an FID card - unless you fall under one of the NARROW exceptions.  I say NARROW, because that is how the police, prosecutor, and judge will interpret it....  AS NARROW AS POSSIBLE.

Okay...  so there's an exemption that says you can transport to/from any target range, "or any other AUTHORIZED PLACE for the purpose of practice...".  See that part about "authorized"?  What's an authorized place?  Well, in other parts of the statute, it talks about a rifle or pistol club, that has it's charter on file with the NJSP, and submits an annual list of members.

It's my opinion that you will be held to the above standard, and your friend's back 40 won't be recognized as an "authorized" place of practice, therefore your possession and transportation will not be legal, and you will wind up in prison.  One only needs to search the recent news articles for guns and New Jersey to find examples of similar treatment.

I would not bring a rifle into nj without a NJ FID card.  Look what happened to the last person who did seven years in jail.  Any M4 will be considered any assualt weapon and thats a 2nd degree crime ten years in prison. I would what until NJ's gun law come into under control via the federal court system.

He could instead just apply for a FID card before moving here...
