Is this okay, Ive been wanting an AK, but worried about legality of it, and since most are shipped with 30 rounders...

This one looks like its good to me, what do you all say? Prob not the highest quality but whatever.

Thanks.

Looks fine. If it is stamped "AK 47" on the receiver it would still be illegal, but that one is made by Century Arms and  I don't think they have ever produced an AK rifle that is stamped with that. This looks like a WASR 10 which is legal in the right configuration. You should be good to go.

Bayonet lug would have to be ground and the muzzle nut has to be welded or silver soldered to be NJ legal.

Other wise it looks good to go.

I would skip that one and find something without the fruity stock.

Since it sounds like you've never owned an AK type rifle, just make sure you realize that this is a single stack rifle so you can not use standard AK mags.  If you buy a double stack rifle you can buy 10 and 15 round double stack mags, and if you ever move out or head to a free state you can then use standard AK mags.  I believe the resale value would be slightly higher on a double stack rifle if that's any concern.

You can always convert the rifle to take double stack mags but that will require you cutting the magwell and altering the lower rails with a dremel.

Just an FYI, good luck.

If your going to do all that, just get a Saiga. Better quality for around the same price.

Hmm, I was not aware of this. I do plan on fleeing the state, so can you get single stack 30 rounders? are they rare or something.

Honestly if you are looking for your first AK plinking rifle, cant go wrong with a WASR-10. Can get a NJ post ban version anywhere from 400-500. Its not fancy by any means and shit will not break. I put close to 5000 rounds through mine before i cleaned it once and it never had any malfunctions.

Now of course if you want fancier you can go with Arsenal Inc. More expensive but the best quality around. You cant beat them. They also convert tons of Saiga rifles which are legit Russian imports.

Just make sure of a few things. No 30 rounders, some WASR's and Saigas are offered with low cap mags. Make sure no bayonet lug or flash hiders. All muzzle brakes/compensators need to be welded or pinned. No folding stocks either. There are some websites and companies that will convert then to NJ legal for you before they send them to your FFL. Some will send it to your FFL and your FFL will convert them for you. Some places..............like AIM SURPLUS wont send AK rifles to NJ regardless if your FFL is exempt from all the banned features. Just ask PK90, a member/FFL on this forum.

Shop around, go to gun shows and see what you like. Although we are limited here in PRNJ

I don't think they make hicap single stack mags.  I noticed Henderson Defense has a NJ legal WASR-10 for about $415, I think you can get legal magazines from him as well.  You can probably get one locally too or through one of the FFL's on the board here.

Good Luck.

I've never ordered from Henderson either but I've heard mostly good things.  I see they have WASR-2's as well for only $50 more.  The magazines (AK74-5.45mm) are more expensive but the ammo is dirt cheap.  I ordered 2K rounds from Copes for less than $300.  I don't know if they still do it but for a while I think they were modifying mags to 15rd capacity?

My henderson wasr10 was 299, but that was 2 or 3 years ago.  No compaints, but I don't shoot any of my 4 aks that much anymore, since I have other, cooler toys now... like msar stg's, m9's, and m&p 15/22's
