I was told no forward grips by a friend. although I don't see that mentioned in the nj laws.

Sadly, your friend is wrong.  Vertical fore grips are fine.. as is the AFG.

Let me know how you like it....I've been debating whether or not to get one, but I haven't been able to feel it so I didn't want to buy it.  I did however get one of their new VFG's, and it's nice.  Good grip to it, and it's just the right length.  And at 20 bucks on brownells...you can't beat it.

What's the appeal? (assuming you aren't standing around with it at low ready all day) it looks uncomfortable for anything but low ready to me

I like them enough that i put one on my service rifle and replaced all the vertical grips on my personal weapons with it

You could always put both on at the same time and go back and forth with it instead of taking one on and off

These pictures used to be posted in the Magpul section of ar15, but I can't seem to find them, so here's a link with the release info Magpul originally put out:
Magpul AFG

ETA:  If anyone is considering buying an AFG, they may want to wait a bit, because the AFG-2 should be coming out sometime this summer.  Not entirely sure what the differences are (might be slimmer or something), but might be worth the wait.

The afg2 will not have those "wings" or flanges because those were preventing you from using rail pannels on certain rails. I could not use magpul rail pannels on a larue rail if i wanted to use the AFG. It eventually fit but it was insanely tight and hard to get off after

Ahh.. good to know.  The AFG-1 fit fine on my DD rails, but I only use rail ladders
