Jersey City man charged in 5 murders JERSEY CITY (WABC) –– A teenager accused of killing an engaged couple in Jersey City during a botched carjacking is now charged in the deaths of 5 people. Shiquan Bellamy has been ordered held on $6 million bail. Detectives say that means of the nine murders committed in Jersey City so far this year, Bellamy is charged with committing more than half. Bellamy and two women had been charged in the Easter killings of the engaged couple, 27-year-old Michael Muchiaki and 25-year-old Nia Haqq. On Monday, the 19-year-old Bellamy was charged in the Feb. 2 felony murders of cousins Mileak Richardson and Lester "Bleek" Thompson. Those men were shot dead at the same time on Woodland Avenue back in February. He also was charged with killing Lamonte Wright on March 27. Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio says it's "beyond humanity that one young man can be charged with causing this much destruction of human life." Those three murders are in addition to the couple that was killed just one week ago Sunday. "As an agency, maybe, just maybe, by our swift action we prevented another victim, that's the only thing we can hang our hat on because we would have rather have prevented any one of these from happening, there's no victory here," said Tom Comey, the Jersey City Police Chief. "This was a crime spree of the devil. We want you to know and be able to go back out there in the street. We can't say too much because the investigation still is in progress," said Sam Jefferson, the Jersey City Police Director. Photos at the link. |

Jersey City Off-Duty Cop Uses CCW to Defend Himself
A Jersey City off-duty police officer bravely fought off six male attackers after he was set upon near his Greenville house Friday night, officials said today.
Detective Donnie McGhee was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center where he received 30 stitches to close a wound he suffered on his face after he was attacked at Neptune Avenue and Old Bergen Road at about 10:40 p.m., police said. No clear motive has been established for the assault. The officer, who was stomped, punched, and struck with objects –– possibly bottles or knives, according to reports –– managed to fire his service revolver during the assault, grazing the ear of Dymond Huggins, 18, of Sheffield Avenue, one of the attackers, police said. Two others were arrested and charged with aggravated assault –– Nikita Bell, 19, of Princeton Avenue, and a 14-year-old male juvenile of Neptune Avenue, police said. Huggins was treated and released from the hospital, police said. "Preliminary indications are that while being a victim of a vicious attack, Det. McGhee has no alternative but to discharge his firearm as he was in fear for his life," Police Chief Thomas Comey said in a statement. "Despite the arrests at the time, this is a very active investigation between the Police Department and the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office as we try to track down the other individuals responsible," Comey added. Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said his office is automatically investigating the incident because the officer fired his weapon. "Preliminarily," the shooting appears to be justified, DeFazio said earlier today. "Clearly this was a large group on one person. The detective was by himself," DeFazio said. "I don't think it (the attack) was because he was an officer." Link |
