How prevalent is football violence these days?

Is it still widespread, or just isolated incidents?

It can get pretty hardcore. Even the players have been known to shoot teammates in training...

It's a lot worse than people think. There is the violence that goes with some of the higher end matches that we always hear about, but then there is the violence and abuse that goes on at small club, Sunday league and even childrens football.

It's not uncommon for the referee to come under sustained attack and I've heard if several school matches where the parents have threatened the referee or even assaulted them. It seems that the widespread lack of respect is endemic I'm football

Contrast that with the exceptionally good behaviour of rugby and it makes you wonder what has gone wrong with football

That's because the violence in Rugby takes place on the pitch. The crowd don't need to get involved.

Wow. I thought it had declined in the past few decades.

There haven't been any disasters recently (Hillsborough, Heysel, etc) with the all-seater stadiums, which is good.

Hooliganism doesn't have much to do with football - it's just a good excuse and meeting point for morons who like causing trouble to meet over a shared interest

How do the police handle it? Do they roll in and bust heads, or let them have at it?

Contrary to what the others say, it's not really that prevalent nowadays.
At least not in the same way as it used to be with organised mass brawls and disruption etc

Overall, the organised violence in football that we had in the 1980's /1990's has declined in UK.
Funky touched on one area of violence that does seem to have increased around minor league & youth football.
I've seen this firsthand myself.
Referees making perectly good decisions & having parents shouting abuse at them, pushing etc. This is still rife imho.

Perhaps the parents are ex-football hooligans just keeping their hands in.................
