Just watched it on sky anytime. Johny Vaughn was shooting at Bisley with brown bess , smle,  martini henry, and a vickers mg. Now according to the expert gunsmith John Hutchins ( who sounds like Boyce from fools and horses ) the following is true:

Brown bess accurate to 100yds
Martini Henry accurate to 600yds
And

Wait for it

The smle is accurate to 1600yds

In which case I'm off to buy one for the sniper match

Here is that very shot..

Cold clean bore at 1000 yards.....

Iron sights.......

......and not an inconsiderate amount of luck....

My wooden gun is however a No. 4, not a SMLE.....

Could you do it another 600yds further?

Lets not forget that a 1000yd, 3 shot, 0.5 MOA group is 'Easy' according to Jayteepee_1999.
So your 'one hole group' may impress him.

Artistic license....and no one to point out their wrongness

That said however, there are those officionado's who would not dispute these rumours of derring-do with the SMLE, which was apparently legendary for it's accuracy.
The volley sights certainly went to 2000 or 2200yds  and the std rear sight was calibrated up to 1300yds or something like that.

Not quite as heroic, but I remember setting my old M4gery up at 800yds on a still day with TA01 ACOG and 92 RG and centering the target through the 800yd aperture in the reticle and shooting 2 V-bulls, a 4, another V-bull and then the wind got me

It was awesome, but only for a few minutes.

As for that steel target the old boy was shooting at..........well it's not 72lbs from the good ole US of A, but we're working on it and it is very close friends

That was for a whole section/company volley firing together and laying down a lead pattern in an enemy trench and indicative of a not a precision shot.

Any way, have you got any NQ1 steel handy to make any targets?  I might know where there might be a little going spare as well as a plasma cutting machine.

I wonder how much Fult*ns charged the production company? Every time I hear John Hutchins I can't help laughing. That voice is one in a million.
