What to do....
She's just had another fall, this time in the garden and was there for 45 minutes calling for help before someone heard her
She's 81 and still recovering from the broken hip she got in the last fall. She has a pager button, well 2 actually, one on a wristband and the other she can wear around her neck, but always has a host of excuses why she's not wearing one. Is it age or what? Honestly it really is stressful, particularly so that she's 150 miles away............. This time after finally plucking up the courage last week to finally start using her mobility scooter and finally regaining some independance with it, she set off to the shops but with the sun shining on the power gauge, thought the battery was flat, so turned round and went home and while plugging in the charger, fell on her knees. It's no surprise old people get caught out and die of hypothermia. |

Sorry to hear that Mark, We're going through pretty much the same with wifey's father, also 81. She (we) made the decision that he come and stay with us as he just refused to take up the option of the emergency pager. Very labour intensive at the moment, he spent nearly 3 weeks in hospital over Xmas and New Year which was bloody heaven, I mean that in the best possible way. |

Sorry to hear that mate.
I know it's a harsh option, but old peoples homes are probably the best thing when your loved ones reach a certain age or should I say are no longer able to look after themselves properly Hope you can sort something out for her. Tony |

Tony Yeah we did this for my Gran as well.. She got a new lease of life when she moved in. It was a battle getting her to go for it to start with. She picked up quickly when she got the bit of care she needed and her confidence improved no end. It's not that they can't handle it but as they get less steady on their feet they start to go out less and their world shrinks. That's when it starts to become a bit unhealthy. We've just done the same with my mother in law who is a great lady. She lost my FIL two years ago to cancer and she became pissed off that she was down south and most of the family including grandkids were up north, so we moved her up here. She lives pretty close to us now but we can never get hold of her cos she's always out and about doing stuff. Her social life is now busier than ours. So much for cheap local babysitting

Going through exactly the same with the mother-in law, she fell last weekend, I went to help her up and she fell yesterday
and a neigbour heard her and called an ambulance, exactly the same scinario, pager and phone in the house, she is 80 and very very independant, wifes going through hell, on the flip side, so am I Onwards and upwards as they say ![]()

Thanks all
She wasn't badly hurt, just a grazed knee, but didn't have the strength to get back up. She's still as stubborn as ever with a whole host of excuses why she wasn't wearing the pager, but from what I hear, they're all the same. Anyhow I've used some psychology on her and threatened that if she continues to not wear it shell be off to the glue factory, or even worse......sheltered housing
