Hi guys, I'm seeking some advice please.

Looking to buy my first straight pull, but have struggled with the only AR15 I've tried, firing from my preferred left shoulder. How do the southpaws out there cope?

I am aware that SGC have a left/right option with the left side folding, and have seen dedicated left handed uppers online, and also like the look of the LAR ops-4 http://www.largrizzly.com/web/guest/ops-4-uppers

Has anyone used these? and can the handles be improved upon?

It's getting so bad, I'm even considering a L/H Steyr Aug.

Speak to Bus Pass Warrior on here.  He shoots a wrong handed AR15.  I'm sure he will be able to advise.

Hi
I am a lefty and shoot Bobs rifles with both left and right hand levers. It works really well and gives both options to shoot from a bipod (RH lever) or freestanding (LH lever) . In my opinion the both levers do not need improving having used them for 5 plus years without any issues. The only downside is the ejection of the cases across the face , i have never had one actually hit me but my advice is to wear quality impact glasses like wiley x just incase  , this becomes quite obvious if you shoot bobs 9mm left handed!

How do you use the rifle without the RH lever hitting you in the face?

In answer to the original question - just get a standard rifle, with a slot milled into the LH side for a cocking handle. The problem with the ambi uppers is that the LH handle is too far forward, you want to have it nearer to the pistol grip...

The RH cocking handle has never hit me in the face whilst using the rifle from the left shoulder and using LH cocking.
Seems like there is enough room to use comfortably.

It doesnt reach your face ,  from a bipod shooting using the RH lever you can comfortably leave your hand on the lever hence increasing rate if fire.

As Phil said I shoot leftie and my first AR was one of FB's.  That's been sold and I now have one Mr Bradley's which he made for me with a left hand side cocking handle, The right hand side is left as Stoner intended ie ejection port cover, case deflector and forward assist (ok Stoner didn't like forward assist).
i) the left hand cocking handle on Southern Gun's AR are too far forward and you break your position reaching for it when standing, sitting or kneeling.
ii) if you are shooting off the bi-pod your right hand should be supporting the butt in your left shoulder not waving around.
ii) if you do used use the right hand handle and your hand slips off in the excitement of a rapid fire stage, you smack yourself hard in the teeth
iv) if you think you might need to use it weak shoulder fit a Badger Ordnance Tac-latch to the charging handle. tac latch

This is my experience and if want my advice have a proper left hand cocking rifle built by somebody who will build what you ask for and not fob you off with their standard product.

Extras that make life easier, ambi-safety catch, tactical bolt release (left hand to pull back bolt, right hand reach round to lock bolt back) and big mag button, (slide left hand thumb under trigger guard grab mag and push mag button in one easy move)

Anything else you need to know?

Left handers get a raw deal in the gun world. I know we get a lot more than 1 in 10 people through the door who are left handed, its more like 1 in 8.
Here,s 3 rifles i built for the same chap who is a cackhander.

the standard ar is very easy for a left hander, with only the addition of and ambi safety and a tac latch. I've used them for years with no detriment to my shooting. ↲↲however, if you regularly use a sling then the addition of a side charging handle (with a generous slot on the left to feed it in slow fire high power or similar) would be a help. ↲

It's even worse if you are a natural right hander but my eye sight problems make it almost impossible for me to shoot from the right shoulder.  I really hate people who put weak shoulder stages in comps

Thanks for the comments guys, it's much appreciated.

One more question, when firing left handed do you ever get a case back in the face?

No never had that problem with any of my guns, including the semi-auto's I've shot and the Bradley BAR-15 has the case deflector so the cases get thrown well clear.

I have had a problem of "blowback splatter" in the face when shooting the 9mm Unicorn (not mine).

Its not only the case , its a ruptured case with the bolt not fully closed that bothers me , has happened with a .22 rnd and that was enough for me to get really good safety glasses

That's why CMMG put gas deflectors on their dedicated .22lr uppers, the blow back design of the .22lr significantly increases the risk of the shooter wearing a ruptured case, to remove this safety feature is somewhat fool hardy. Wearing safety glasses when shooting a .22 lr blowback is highly recommended.

Not on the straight-pulls.

Wear glasses for semi or the unicorn though.

Lets face it, we should all wear safety glasses at all times when shooting......but we don't

High speed fragments and Mk1 eyeballs aren't a good combination any time.

I spent a couple of hrs at the hospital this morning getting a small metal particle removed from the surface of my left eye (my good one) due to some crap getting blown around at work with an air line. Now the eye is scratched and i'm taking a lubricant gel and feeling thoroughly miserable .

AR's don't generally throw brass backwards, but when they do, can be tuned via the extractor spring, however......9mm uppers (proper ones) utilise a clip on case deflector which is to be recommended, but you will always have gas and residue.

Ever fire a semi auto AR without glasses? it's not to be recommended with all the shit that comes back through the charging handle slot.

Not nice

Yep. I have a small piece missing from the sclera (white part) of my right eye from some crap flying around whilst shooting. It won't grow back and leaves a thin/weak spot but I still don't wear glasses when shooting my centrefires, only rimfires. A colleague, wearing glasses, got an eyebrow cut open from shooting a 9mm when a piece of the jacket came back up the range........

Ouch.... I wear glasses anyway, but tend to wear my prescription shooting specs when shooting the .50bmg/9mm/Semi-auto shotgun - just in case.

Plus one on the prescription shooting specs - I shoot clays and you would be amazed at the amount of people who don't wear glasses or caps; even when shooting driven targets and teals. It's a mistake that I am guessing that you will only make once; however by then it could already be too late

Now have had a sight test and having prescription lens fitted at £*** but what price eye-sight?
also ordered a pair of specs with a prescription for shooting iron sighted wooden guns & M/L pistol, ie I should be able to see the foresight clearly.
