What groups are realistic with an Aimpoint at 50m with my BAR15? I've been tinkering today and I've not been able to place more than two within 1/2" of each other, though most are in a 3" - 4" group off a rest, with the smallest dot I can still clearly see. I plan to practice as much as my wife and my wallet with let me, but I'm interested to know what I can be reasonably happy with.

What's the dot size? 3-4" at 50m off a rest is quite a large group

Depends...

If you have a 2MoA dot, then the dot itself will be 1" at 50yards (or 2" if you have a 4MoA dot) - if you are then using a target with a 6" black scoring area, then it will be pretty hard to put the dot in the same place for each shot.... Also, what sort of rest are you using, and is the barrel free floating?

Ehh, don't know about the dot size, it's not my sight Will find out.

I tend to use the hoppes 100 yard sighting target as it works with my rubbish eyesight beyond 25 meters

The rest is just a basic bit of wood with a half circle, nothing fancy. I usually shoot off my elbows by preference but I wanted to eliminate my wobble for testing.

try bringing you target back to 25m re shoot your groups just concentrate on you marksmanship principles, when you are happy with your group size move back out to 50m and shoot again. above all relax!

you could check you are looking in a straight line through your optics as this will make a difference.

Chuck the Aimpoint, it's not meant to be a precision piece of kit.

Aye chuck it........my way.
They are made for killing men at close quarter with. I would put a scope on it, and then see what it will do. I guarantee you will amazed.
I know a lot of people use them, but i honestly cannot see what use they are on a precision rifle past 25 yards. I have a micro on my shotgun, and i,m just about to put another micro on my pistol.....but i wouldn,t ever use one on a practical rifle...just not precise enough.

So do I.

I'm not a "precision" shooter but I wanted to see how far I could push it. I like 50m because it lets me shoot from the covered firing points Next time out I might need to go prone from the 25m forward point just to see how it changes things.

Telescopic sights feel like cheating, though I'll eventually have to get something so I see what the feck I'm aiming at over 200m

Edited to add: I'm only using it on loan until my ironsights arrive, but it's growing on me

It's a 4 moa dot and it's only on loan till your irons turn up.....which they have.
If I'd known that you were planning to shoot .223 I'd have leant you a short dot or sumnink

Actually I was using it mainly for the .22RF but then I started wondering...

Now on a rimfire....different kettle of fish altogether. Great for mini rifle etc, where you are snap shooting, at close range.

Whilst on the subject of aimpoints etc, my red dot packed up on me, halfway through a match yesterday, and it was one of the older, half decent japanese panorama,s. You simply cant afford to have a sight pack up half way through a comp. I was absolutely cruising with the pistol yesterday. Day spoilt, entry fees wasted, wife yelled at, dog booted.

Bloody aimpoint on order. Cry once.
