Just got back from the (Zahnarzt) Dentist, been having a bit of a twinge every now and then so I thought I'd just nip in and let him have a look, great bloke, never one to do any unnecessary work, replaces fillings in minutes without the injections and the pain is bearable, well he had a quick look and started prepping the injection kit, gave me the serious look, and said that he might be able to save the top left rear molar as the tooth hasn't died, he just needs to have a quick look inside....

While I was waiting for the injection to work his assistant removed the stony stuff off my teeth and had polished them by the time he'd got back.

So off he went, drilling for oil, didn't find any, but the root had split and gotten infected, and started to rot from the root out. He explained what he'd found and that there was no way to save the tooth, so out it came.

Nasty!

I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed under local anesthetic - 40 minutes of scalpels, drilling, pliers and a noise that sounded very similar to wood splitting - in my mouth! To finish the job he then filed down my jaw down - "to make sure that all the root was gone"

Not the most enjoyable morning I have spent away from work!

To be honest, I don't mind, there was no work for me today so I would have had the day off, unpaid. So I was more than pleased when he put me on the sick for today and tomorrow.

Hope it feels better soon - and enjoy the rest!

I remember my dentist giving up on getting my final wisdom tooth out. Following the grinding sawing & wood splitting sound effects she then had her knee in my chest whilst tugging on the pliers - this failed so she called the senior partner for help and as he was big bloke his knee was much more effective and job was done. Hurt like a v painful hurting thing.

Been there twice with that, rear molars that did not want to leave. Both occasions took six or seven separate injections of anaesthetic, lots of heaving and snapping, cracking noises and eventually the boss man. 40+ minutes with gob wedged open and stainless steel implements rattling around inside, bloody painful and wrecked for a couple of days afterwards. One consequence is that I now can't shoot .303 or anything else with significant recoil.

And there is always some twat who had it done in 10 minutes at lunchtime,  was back at work the same day and does not see what the problem is.

Ha,
I spent 3 days in hospital having my wisdom teeth removed. Totally compacted.

When I was 8 I tried to re-enact a James Bond car jump on my bike but crashed and burned badly and ended up with very buckled front teeth.

When I was 17, I came off mymotor bike and got hit in the face by the handlebars, knocking said front teeth clean out.
This resulted in dentures and then a bridge.

About 12 years ago, a cast iron starting handle flew off a diesel enging I was working on and hit me right in the gob, smashing the bridge and further damaging the teeth.

New bridge was the result.

I know all about dentists and am still undergoing treatment. including some deep under gum rooting about.

Isn't it wonderful?

I had my wisdom teeth pulled years ago, as they were crushing my molars, to late damage done.

I might add my childhood Dentist Mr.Smith of Blackburn in Lancashire had the idea of drilling all of your adult teeth and that any future work just meant removing the bad filling and refill the cavity, god I hope that man died a painful death.

BTW, the molar was out in no time at all, as were all my wisdom teeth, I feel for all of you that have had worse experiences.

Having mentioned Mr. Smith and his antics as an adolescent, I'm very choosy when it comes to my Dentist's, I have had two female Dentists and they both got the sack for the same reason, hurting me, and instead of saying "sorry", they both said the same sh!t implying that I was a wimp, the last one was startled as I stood up spat the crap out of my mouth and left, walked across the road to my current Dentist and explained the situation. He is brilliant, all the family go there now. A great man and dentist, he asked me why I hadn't been to see him earlier. I couldn't resist pulling his leg, he had a motorbike accident last year and was himself in Hospital. I gave him a cheeky smile and asked if he'd learned how to ride a motor bike? That got him laughing, and off to work he went. I was probably in there about 45 minutes or so.

Back when I broke Her Majesty's aircraft for a living, we had to have routine dental checks and being still young whippersnappers were still not in full possession of wisdom teeth. Or any other form of wisdom as it turned out. Anyway, at the slightest hint of a wisdom tooth problem the solution then was whip 'em out. At the time of my check I had them all coming through so was not looking forward to my turn.Fortunately for my the opinion was that I could keep them all, and I still have them today

Perhaps you are destined to exist on soup and blancmange.

Is there an element of Darwinian selection at work here?

You poor people, the idea of dental surgery makes me cringe. I have been quite lucky so far and havent had any dental problems yet that have needed anything more than oil of cloves or liquid benadryl. I am not sure if my wisdom teeth have come through yet or not, how many molars should we have?
