Very sunny Sennybrige today ( 4 AR's present )
On G Range using (aprox 120 rnds)RORG 92 and could hit everything out to the guy in the window every time (400m I think ) I was extremely happy with my Scopeye M4gery

Changed to RG 04 and could not hit him at all....

Why?

Dirty gun
Hot gun
Me
Ammo

Anyone got any pointers?

Cheers
Taffy

Was a great day shooting in the sun but the last box of ammo left me confused.

The newer ammo has a lot more poke than the old 92 stuff

If that's correct and I've no reason to doubt you then that explains everything...cheers

I spoke to someone at the range today who claimed it was the same ammo to same spec and doubted him only because of my results.

Thanks Mark

Taffy

ETA do we have a chart of year of manufacture with differences in ammo

IIRC there is up to about 200fps difference.
They did change the spec, they had to.
Anything with a later L2A2 headstamp has more velocity than the older early 90's RG headstamped ammo

What was the reason behind it ...just out of curiosity

Is this the same for 7.62?

I think 7.62 has always had enough poke...

I hear you . cant dissagree but in these matters I have to defer to those in the know. As this change in RG 5.56 I was not aware of before so God forbid there could be more that I do not know. Don't tell my wife..

Hey Tafffy

I was on F range at Senny today, weather was indeed awesome

I was using '92 vintage RG through the 14.5 carbine & 20" rifle today. Both got consistent hits on the 600m ETR before its battery went flat....

I chrono'd the 1992 stuff earlier this year.

M4 - 2950fps
20" - 3150fps

Cheers
Steven

ETA I'll chrono the 04 stuff next chance I get.

I once got to the point at Bisley and realised the bolt for my 700 was still in my cabinet...

I once got to the range and realised I'd left the keys to the gun case at home, shit happens. Human nature to make mistakes, and some of us are very human.

Well that's better than getting to your cabinet and realising your 700 is still on the point at Bisley.................................

I've just checked my records from that chrono session.

My reloads with 77smk, lapua brass & 24.5g Rel 15 in my 20" AR gave an average of 2751fps....which is what you'd typically expect for this load ?

3150 fps is a little high for RG, the spec sheet quotes just over 3000 fps.  From a short barrelled M4 your 2950 seems even more optimistic but there are many variables that can effect chrono measurements.  It must also be understood that a chrono available to the average shooter is not a precision scientific instrument and should not be treated as such.

Yeah,  fair one. I'm just looking at the spreadsheet now & I was wrong about the M4 velocities I quoted earlier. That day I measured an average of 2900, not 2950.

FWIW 7.62 RG Bisley 'match' averaged 2800fps from my Sako TRG.

Moral of the story is don't vary year of manufacture of your RG Ammo.

find a batch that works well and buy a shit load of it.

I've always found RG of all batches I've tried to be OK but there can be the occasional (1 in 10) hard extraction.

However, fired 100 rds of RUAG the other evening through my AR, most impressed - no extraction problems at all & very consistant - preferable to RG in a straight pull. I'm a convert, which is annoying...

The upper Mark built for me is chambered for RG (I'll never play with exotic loads). That's all I've put through it (62grn) and I'm chuffed to bits with it. I was surprised how accurate it is , even out at 600 yards!

Oh yes, yes indeed

I also remember once me and thee setting off for Wareham and only remembering as we passed the Bisley turn-off on the M3 that I'd forgotten my ammo, and us making a hasty detour to Bisley to buy a can of RG

lol,
Wasn't that the same time we went the wrong way on the M27 and wondered why the sun was coming up in front of us and not behind?
